re: My biggest problem with following soccer or the World Cup.

Like clockwork.
Instead of acknowledging that it s a silly, completely arbitrary rule that puts WAY too much power in the hands of the officials they go out of their way to defend it in the most smug way possible. Meanwhile trying to use alternative English vernacular for words used daily in America acting like they are the official soccer words for it when majority of the world playing soccer speaks Spanish.
This is coming from someone who actually enjoys watching the World Cup.

How hard is it in this age of technology, to have the ref/timekeeper/whoever it is that runs this mystical clock, have it connected to a scoreboard clock that everyone can see in order to know how much damn time is left in a game?

The NFL doesn't even do that.
What you are asking for is something like this:
*whistle* "Scoreboard operator, please reset the match clock to 14:56"
*whistle* "Scoreboard operator, please reset the match clock to 17:12"
*whistle* "Scoreboard operator, please reset the match clock to 33:20"
*whistle* "Scoreboard operator, please reset the match clock to 41:51"
*whistle* "Scoreboard operator, please reset the match clock to 44:20"
*whistle* "Scoreboard operator, please reset the match clock to 44:40"

I would look at it in American football terms as an active play that is going on when the clock reaches :00. The play doesn’t end until the ball carrier is down, the ball goes out of bounds, a turnover or the team scores.

Ads and commercials aren’t the same thing.
I’ll just continue to argue that the more hard stops you put in play the more likely the broadcast networks will be to insert commercial breaks.
Remember when we were promised that the 2 minute timeout (don’t call it a warning) in NCAA wasn’t going to be just another commercial break.
