So the Astros shouldn't try to improve and make a trade for another starter? You should always try to improve your odds of winning and not rely on lady luck to make that happen for you.
Weird take.
Of course they should try to improve. They shouldn't, however, trade guys that they think will help consistently win the division over the next half-decade for a rental. So if they really think that Tucker, Whitley, Beer, Rojas, etc. are the guys that will keep a division title streak going, don't move them.
Also, adding a guy that's going to be a 3rd or 4th starter doesn't really change the odds. Adding an ace like Verlander does, and since he had more control that trade also goes toward that goal of consistently winning the division.

See the difference here is that Vasquez is not a rental nor would the Dodgers be mortgaging their future. The circumstances here are different.
Now with a rental player, I definitely get the point. It doesn't apply here.

The Washington #Nats get at least one reliever by swinging a trade for #Jays veteran Daniel Hudson, per @ScottyMitchTSN

Current chatter might have you think Yankees are having trouble locking down a starter and instead might go the way of a SuperPen.

The Braves only winning one in their whole run is an anomaly. Same with the Bills losing 4 Super Bowls in a row.
Exactly. The Braves could have just as easily had 3 WS titles if not for two fluke plays. Adding a player or two wouldn't have likely changed that.
From Atlanta's perspective, there are 4 pitchers right now that would be pencilled in to their postseason starting rotation....Soroka, Keuchel, Teheran, and Fried. If you can find a starting pitcher that is clearly better than one of those 4, then great...go get him. But that ain't Tanner Roark, that ain't Mike Minor, that ain't most of the guys who were rumored to be available.
Yeah, you lengthen your rotation for the regular season and have a good arm at all 5 spots, but they are likely going to win the division with what they have already. The goal is to win post season series. There's no point in mortgaging the future so that you can have 5 solid starters instead of 4. 4 is easily enough to get to the playoffs.

Apparently whenever they inquire teams are starting with wanting Gleyber Torres. I am all for making a trade to put you on point to win a WS but with what’s available that is crazy. Super pen with Severino and Betances possibly coming back to help pen might be the best option.

I was speaking more in general terms as opposed to that specific deal.

Going into 2020, The astros will only have Verlander unless they sign Miley and Cole.
I say trade for another SP this year and go get the damn ring.

Verlander and Lance mccullers. Only 2 SP under control beyond this season. Obviously urquidy, whitley may be options but that's a thin cupboard.

I’m guessing that’s Bumgarner?
Or maybe Will Smith

The Giants are preparing for potential roster-altering trades today by bringing multiple minor league pitchers to Philadelphia on the taxi squad (via @PavlovicNBCS)
