If you're as good as the Dodgers and one player is worth it you go for it, I agree you don't worry about 2+ years down the line. Give me a WS over a few division titles because we remained good for so long.

and give me the playoffs year in, year out instead of going all in on 2019 and getting bounced in the NLDS by a shitty milwaukee team all because they had the ball bounce their way a couple times in a best of 5 series

So the Indians traded a pitcher who is hooked on crazy pills for an outfielder who is hooked on crazy gel capsules.

Nah, never.... Give me the title. I don't wanna be the Braves and have to hang my head on winning the division for so long or the Bills who can brag they made it to the title game each year

and i think we all understand that relievers are ticking time bombs and you just never know what you are going to get with them with each subsequent year. even those with proven track records

And prospects are just as risky if not more. The difference is one is a proven elite commodity that fills a position of need.

this is just a mindset that bugs the crap out of me and i will never understand. it should never be your goal to increase your odds in any individual season. baseball is a dumb sport where the orioles could beat the dodgers in a best of 5 series. even acquiring a player like vazquez would still leave the dodgers as very unlikely to win the world series just due to the fact that baseball is a pretty dumb sport when its forced into a small sample size

After falling short over and over again, that should be their mindset. Just imagine if it happens again this season. The melt would be unbearable especially knowing they could have done something to improve their odds this season. This move wouldn't just be a short term investment. It helps their odds for years to come.

quote:

its kind of an overpay. not a crazy one that would scare me off of doing it. i guess id do it if the organization is confident that it can replace gray. but its an overpay

It would be different if the Dodgers didn't have Will Smith. They're dealing from a position of strength and get to keep their top two prospects, it's worth it. Or, they could always just deal for a mediocre lefty and play Russian roulette.

The Dodgers time is now. Those prospects can always be replaced.

I really want to see one of these contending teams separate themselves from the rest of the pack.

100% correct. Especially a team like the Dodgers or Astros that are a near lock to win their respective division. Once you do that, it's basically a 1/8 shot at a World Series title. One player isn't going to change those odds much at all, so the goal is to make sure you have that 1/8 shot again next year, and again the next.

A team that's battling for a division title and avoiding that wild card game has much more to gain. Essentially doubling your chances if you can win the division.

One, they could have had multiple. Of course their biggest stars were from trades

so winning one in a 2 year window is better than winning one in a 15?

Nope but someone like Vasquez makes that window longer. He is young, very good, and with the Dodgers where they are now he shores up the bullpen for multiple years. I'm not saying to trade him for your very best prospect, but a couple/few in the top 10 sure, most are bust we all know that. So unless someone is a sure thing I say trade.

I haven't read the conversation between you and whoever, just when you quoted you would prefer to be good over a banner

The best chance for a banner is to be consistently good.

The Braves only winning one in their whole run is an anomaly. Same with the Bills losing 4 Super Bowls in a row.

Passan on the radio just now said he talked to one executive from a playoff team who said the asks for Vazquez, Iglesias and Yates are "totally unreasonable" and that he doesn't expect any of them to be moved as of now. Said that the feeling is that no contender is on the verge of folding/giving in to the demands of the sellers. Said the thought with two hours with these teams is that they'll just go to battle with the teams they have amongst each other and let the sellers' players rot the next two months if they won't play ball.

So the Astros shouldn't try to improve and make a trade for another starter? You should always try to improve your odds of winning and not rely on lady luck to make that happen for you.

Weird take.
