If anything is apparent from the past 3 months, America can do without baseball and apparently so can the owners.
Nobody is talking about this. Nobody seems to actively care. It’s odd.

Best to pass up this year so that it doesn't get too messy. Simply removed this year and start next year normal.

What's this I'm reading about how Manfred could basically just impose a 50-game season at full pro-rated salaries? Does he really have that authority?
Yes, Manfred has that authority, he can impose a 50 game season.
Manfred can't without MLBPA approval, make any changes to the post season format. The previous CBA limits the number of post season participants.

That would certainly make every game count! Would be an extreme change of pace for MLB regular season.

Baseball is dead, they should have been back playing by now

a second wave of the coronavirus could disrupt the postseason and jeopardize $787 million in broadcast revenue.
What's the difference in not being able to play due to a second wave and not playing because you're a bunch of greedy fricks? That alleged $787M is not going in their pocket either way. At least if you play, there's a chance you get thru the playoffs.

That’s actually a really good point I hadn’t thought of. My gut reaction is that a 50ish game regular season would be a joke. However, we love college football so much because of how much each game counts, so a super short regular season may add a sense of urgency to regular season games that would be interesting.

Nats remain WS Champs for another year, I’m cool with it.

With no extended playoff, too.
Imagine the Astros, Yankees, or Dodgers 3 games out with 20 games to play.

I only have a very high level understanding of what is going on with the baseball negotiations. This is basically how I see it.
The players want a straight prorated salary based on games played. The owners want less than a prorated salary based on games played. The owners are at least publicly worried about their revenue in a shortened season. Due to fans not being in the stands they aren't sure that their revenue will be half a full season revenue, and since the players don't know what the owners book look like can only call their bluff but not prove it.
MLB doesn't have a salary cap so does that not allow the players to see the owners books?
I know football and basketball have a salary cap and the salary cap is basically negotiated to be a percentage of the total revenue. Which is what caused that big jump in the NBA salary cap a few years ago when they renegotiated the TV contract.
So is this a trade off to not having a salary cap that in a time like this the players cannot look into the owners finances?

Hosmer just said he is confident it starts in August
How long would the season be if this was the case?
MLB absolutely blew this opportunity

Typical of the MLB, both owners and players alike.
Starting in August basically gives them less than a month until NFL season kicks off and people stop caring. Also, viewership won't be nearly what it could have been in May, June or July, especially as restrictions potentially ease even more in late and people likely start leaving their homes regularly.
They could have played in May or June with creative planning and dominated TV ratings and regenerated casual fan interest with people still home, but in typical short-sighted fashion, the MLB completely whiffed on an opportunity.

Well, MLS is officially coming back before all of them.

hey have a perfect opportunity to get people interested in the sport as a whole, yet they keep fricking that up
This is why I think owners should do what it takes to make a season happen. They’ve got much more to gain/lose and are losing sight of the big picture.

if the owners had any interest in playing this season, they would stop negotiating in bad faith and would make a serious effort to come to a reasonable compromise. but they dont so they arent. they have arbitrarily decided how much they are going to pay in salary and will not make any agreement that deviates from that. so manfred is just going to set a 48 game schedule next week and the union will file its grievance

So don’t play baseball in 2/3 seasons? Because I see almost no way they play in 2022

Can someone explain to me why they aren't iterating faster? I saw Whit Merrifield's tweet where he was promoting that they came back to the owners in 48 hours as an achievement. What the frick? Why aren't these guys in a conference room this week banging this shite out?
Posted on 6/10/20 at 1:35 pm to Allthatfades
If it went away forever I would not care.... a bunch of guys playing A SPORT getting paid way more than they are worth and griping about it disgusts me.

Fortnight. Players have live streams and shite to take care of.
