Baseball is looking doubtful this year. Wonder who blinks first. LINK

quote:

Major League Baseball has rejected the players' offer for a 114-game regular season with no additional salary cuts and told the union it did not plan to make a counterproposal, sources confirmed to ESPN.

quote:

MLB told the union it had no interest in extending the season into November, when it fears a second wave of the coronavirus could disrupt the postseason and jeopardize $787 million in broadcast revenue.

While management has suggested it could play a short regular season of about 50 games with no more salary reductions, it has not formally proposed that concept. Earlier this week, multiple players told ESPN that they would not abide a shorter schedule, with one saying, "We want to play more games, and they want to play less. We want more baseball."

There’s more pessimism today w/rejection of union offer, but smart folks still believe things will be worked out. While it hasn’t been offered, belief here is players might do 82 games at full pay. And owners would come up from 40% paycut offered. Would 20% cut and 90 games work?
quote:

MLB absolutely will not go for 114 games or close to that as there’s concern for a 2nd wave and the postseason is a necessity for them (and fans). MLB brass also doesn’t see the offer of small deferrals as worth much in the grand scheme of big $ losses.

End of next week, is the critical days.

Cardinals Moronic President oF baseball Operations claimed if they don't get it done by Next weekend, it's extremely doubtful they play at all.

He's a good shill, so take it for what it's worth.

Someone better blink bc if one side doesn’t take some lumps and with potential of NBA pushing their season back into spring, baseball will be a dead sport.

frick both players and owners.

It's going to settle in at 82

82-32 = 50, the games the owners offered
82+32 = 114, the games the players offered

That's the reason the players came up with that 114, they just added the 32 the owners took away. Everyone worries because the two sides make every single thing public when they turn away an offer

No season this year and I'm done with MLB. I came back after 81 and 94, but third strike and I'm out. No season and they lose my ticket money, MLB Extra Innings money, and a thousand or so on merchandise. Frick them.

Well they can kiss any casual fans goodbye, along with some lifers I would assume.

Both sides look really bad here, and they can't come to what should seemingly be a relatively simple solution to make a season of some sort happen. But they can't push their baseball politics aside for the greater good. Sounds familiar with all the bullshite going on in the country right now. So it's no wonder they can't get shite together and make it happen.

I don't ever really watch MLB outside of some postseason here and there. But I would have watched some had they been the only sports going. Good job, millionaire and billionaire idiots.

They have a perfect opportunity to get people interested in the sport as a whole, yet they keep fricking that up

Hearing great confidence that there will be baseball this year even after players/owners hit a stalemate in talks yesterday. Not sure why this is but could be because owners believe commissioner can and may be willing to mandate a short — about 50 games — regular season.
quote:

Owners believe there are 2/3 ways to play: 1) players accept or negotiate off owners’ sliding scale 82-game proposal (owners are willing to talk about less than the 40% paycut offered) 2) the commissioner mandates a very shortened season (50 or so games) with prorated a layer pay

Two major league sources told Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News on Thursday that the league may leave it up to local and municipal governance on whether to allow fans in the stands. That would be a plus for the Rangers and Astros, as Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced this week that teams in the state will now be able to fill their stadiums to 50 percent capacity.

Baseball in about to be dead as we know it very shortly.

Guess Mozeliak won’t get his chance to fully run the organization into the ground.

#MLB Owners probably have right to implement 50g season @pro-rated salaries. However, they should do right thing & implement 82g & take catastrophic losses. Then should ea. set payroll budgets for ’21-’24 to make it work in long run.Managing Salary Arbit & FA to fix bottom lines.
