From the Mayo Clinic's website:

quote:
Alcoholism is a chronic and often progressive disease that includes problems controlling your drinking, being preoccupied with alcohol, continuing to use alcohol even when it causes problems, having to drink more to get the same effect (physical dependence), or having withdrawal symptoms when you rapidly decrease or stop drinking. If you have alcoholism, you can't consistently predict how much you'll drink, how long you'll drink, or what consequences will occur from your drinking.

If you don't consider it a disease, you are fortunate to think that way. So don't argue with people that consider it one if your basis is that it is a disorder/mental illness etc. because at the end of the day, it is a devastating condition that can absolutely destroy people and those close to them.

This. And it is a disease

One doesn't consciously choose to get cancer.
Come on, people.
Those things give you cancer. Those people had a choice, they chose money over health.

No argument here.
I think those that believe its not a disease likely don't appreciate that drinking excessively is a symptom of rather than the actual disease. I can see where they are coming from, its just not accurate.

Drug addiction is a disease. I don't know about overeating.
Overeating would be a disease, because you can't stop shoving food in your mouth. Thats the problem with labeling addiction as a disease, you open up so many variables. A guy can't stop fricking fat women? Disease.

Do you consider porn addiction a disease also?

There is a LOT of money being made by addiction doctors and centers. The mental professionals coining alcohol/drug addiction as a disease is marketing/branding imo.

You don't get violently sick and possibly die from not fricking fat chicks

Too much money in the addiction industry not to have it branded a disease. When those that benefit monetarily from any behavior being labeled a disease, you can bet your arse that profession is gonna brand your behavior a disease.

No its fricking not you retard. You choose to do one. No one chooses to get a cold or get fricking cancer. Go DIAF.

Its still a choice. Keep alcohol away from the degenerate POS and guess what no more addiction. If the variable can change with a lack of supply its probably not real.
Go ahead and tell me hoe this works for cancer.

I don't really disagree with what Carter said about the Browns cutting Gordon. I'm sure he was just answering a question on a show or something. I doubt he made it his business to personally go out and attack Gordon.
i have no comment on if alcoholism or drug addiction is a disease.
this a sports board not a fricking Al-Anon support group debate.
or a damn intervention.
or a NA meeting.
or an AA meeting.

Jesus Christ, drug addiction and alcoholism isn't a fricking disease. It's a damn choice, that gives weak people a disorder. Professionals call it a disease to cash in on it and family members call it a disease to give their stupid family members a copout. I drink, sometimes a shite ton, sometimes not at all. It's all a choice. Does this mean I'm lucky enough not to have the disease? No, I choose not to.
Btw I'm not downplaying the seriousness of addiction. It horrible and I'd help any family or friends that needed help in that area. But it isn't a disease.

You are being a fricking dick and you are doing a lot of speculating. Fact is, it is a disease.

Is sex addiction a disease?
ETA: I might have that if it includes both fricking and fapping in the definition.

This. I guess those people that are addicted to eating inedible shite like chalk and detergent have a disease too.
Addiction is a mental disorder, plain and simple.

As someone with some experience on this subject, I completely disagree. Kids with cancer have zero control over it. A person has a choice with what they put in their body and how often they do it

A person makes a choice over and over again whether or not to inject heroin in his arm or snort that line of coke. No one has ever made a choice to become a cancer patient an they have no control over it
