Pac-12 commish George Kliavkoff visiting SMU Wednesday, sources told @ActionNetworkHQ. San Diego State & SMU are top Pac-12 expansion candidates. Pac-12 needs more members & more inventory for new media rights deal, which is expected to rely heavily on digital streaming services

San Diego is not San Diego State

That’s interesting though…SMU and not TCU or Houston?

I'm guessing perhaps SMU's academic profile?

I'm shocked the Pac 12 is talking to a school with a religious affiliation.

SMU is filthy rich especially considering its size. They have the money to dump into all their athletic programs and facilities if they want to. That’s a big if though.

If given a big enough platform with legitimate goals in front of them, SMU has a shite ton of money available. They weren't given the death penalty because they were broke. The program upside pisses on any school in Texas not UT or TAM.

It plants a flag in DFW also.

If Kliavkoff is reaching out to a relatively small private school and Diet Arizona State at this point in the negotiations, he's got to be desperate and not getting an offer that will keep the conference together.

I'm guessing the whole thing collapses and in the next few months and the Arizona Schools, Utah, and CU bolt followed by Oregon and Washington making a move of some kind.

USC and SMU are very similar all the way down the the number of students that transfer between them.

I think Stanford or Cal would much more anti SDSU than anti SMU

Big 12 and Pac 12 remnants should merge for football and call it the Big West or something like that. Then we will have a "P4" and which is less of a sham than the Power 5, even though in reality is a Power 1.5. But this would neatly set up the 4 conference winners getting the bye.

The way some people are talking about SMU in 2023 is like a Conference that was courting Notre Dame ten years ago.

They are not going to bring the Dallas market. Most people in Dallas don’t care about SMU.

And thank God. It's the only school Muss could go to and not pay a buyout per his contract. He went there.

Kliavkoff has already said that religion or academic status will not prevent them from adding teams.

While that's good, it's a bit late because it cost them BYU, which makes way more sense in the Pac 12 than the Big 12.

Pac 12 needs to add SMU, San Diego State, Fresno State, UNLV and Boise State. Maybe even consider New Mexico and Wyoming. Then market themselves as the conference of the West. They would have a team in every western state except Montana.

They may even consider adding Gonzaga and St. Mary's as non-football members.

I think Kliavkoff has been a complete failure, but I disagree with you here.

He's extremely limited in his options for adding teams, just as the Big 12 was. SMU, San Diego State, and potentially 2 more out of UNLV, Fresno State and Boise State, would be just as good as the Big 12 in my opinion.

You’re correct. People often talk about “sleeping giants” in CFB, but never mention SMU when they should. Especially with NIL.

My sister was a a cheerleader there from 2008-2012. She’s now a surgeon and the money her and my BIL give to the school would make even the Vatican blush.

They don't have to deliver the Dallas market. They just have to be IN the Dallas market. They need a team in the central time zone, maybe more than one. It gives them more scheduling options and available time slots for football games.

People criticizing this move are focusing too much on SMU and whatever short-comings you believe they have, which is probably not false.

The Pac 12 needs to add states and time zones.

This would be a joke two years ago.

This collapse is showing why USC and UCLA left. They were carrying the Conference and equal revenue sharing.

Pac is going to have to drop their Academic, high and mighty standards... Big10 beat them to the punch and kept theirs because the Pac treated USC like they were fricking Oregon State.

Now I guess the PAC will have to drop their "major research institution" and agnostic standards for taking in schools.

Tulane obviously isn’t an athletic juggernaut but we’ve accomplished more than SMU…
