The college connection is what has always made college sports special, but ironically it is now the college connection that is holding it back. If your contention is that college athletes are normal college students taking part in a university-sponsored activity, then legally you can't treat them differently than other college students. Other students can change schools every year if they choose, so athletes can't be barred from doing the same. Honestly I'm not sure there is any way around that other than making the athletes employees of the universities.

If you don’t want the schools to be involved with paying athletes, I could maybe get down with that. It may not be totally fair, but every organization and society has rules that aren’t totally fair.

What’s asinine is that Tammy the Tik Tocker can go to LSU and make a gazillion dollars, but a football players can’t leverage their fame to sign autographs or do commercials or get a shoe deal. It’s inherently unamerican

Eh.. the money has always been there, just other people were getting it.. If you were a recruit would you rather a $100k or put that towards a new locker room.. The money used to be used for "the greater good" of the program as a whole, now the money is going to the top producers (or top potential),, some will have to start lower work their way up to more money... it is really just the free market at play

This has been an illusion since probably the 70's or maybe the 80s.

they no longer caps on how much eligibility you have so there are 34 year old men playing "college ball"

I mean if they were that good they’d be in the NFL

The one thing that has to change is the portal and you have to get some kind of commitment for the $ they are getting, it can't be for only one year at a time

I feel like they need to go back to the requirement that you have to sit out a year if you transfer. Automatic eligibility started the fire and NIL just added fuel to it.

Also, I'm never going to root as hard against a player as I am Bryce Underwood. I hope he busts so hard and that he is a prime example of why you should never give a high school kid 10 million dollars before he ever plays a snap in college. If he busts I feel like it'll be a slight teaching lesson for teams forking out that much money before seeing any results.

So amateurism in sports shouldn’t have ever been a thing?

I certainly agree with what you are saying and for the most part I do the same to keep myself sane, the problem is I no longer care about the players individually.
Feels the same way I do about the Saints players now. I could care less if they are happy just win games because you are getting paid to.

College was different for me because I felt many of them Loved Louisiana and the school and that I identified with because I was the same way as just a student.
Now we have no commonalities and all I care about is W and L’s.

Mostly frustrated because I loved being all in on College sports.

I get all that. I have just decided I will not let it get to me and I still find myself really liking certain players. I used to really enjoy the comradery of fans as well but that has gotten rougher and rougher but that started before the portal or NIL.

There is no wrong way to feel about it, I'd say, though there may be wrong ways to act in those regards. I try not to be too much of an arse, I probably fail miserably at times though

The ncaa, schools, and their administrators didn’t always make millions or hundreds of millions of dollars

There was a time when they argued that paying coaches would lead to the end of amateurism in sports. Looks like they were right

I guess the way I look at it is that when they started making millions then billions off of the athletic performances of these players there should have been a recalibration that shared some of that wealth with the people actually producing the product that was in such high demand.

Fun talking about College athletics.

I am out on following recruiting and the entire NIL circus. I still enjoy watching the games as much as I always have.

I'll find out who is on LSU's roster when we take the field for the first game next year, outside of that I don't care to know. Even if you follow it religiously, you should know that nothing you "know" today will necessarily be true tomorrow, so what is the point in keeping up with it.

To me the portal is the bigger issue. Players already quiting before the season is finished. And there will be plenty of takers for these selfish assholes

I casually watch lsu when I’m with a group. I use to have a suite ( corporate) and personal tickets. Have none any more….
So much more to life than overly involved (idol) in a sport.

Well the problem is the outliers taint the whole connection to the team

I've always thought that college football is at its best when it feels like a supercharged version of high school football. What we have now feels like a watered down version of the NFL.

That’s exactly what it is.

The problem and difference now between the NFL and College is the players currently have ALL the control.

In anything with money involved, there needs to be contracts in place to protect the interests of the investor and the school.
Without that it’s a Free for All, and fans get teams(I use that loosely now) get a watered down version of a quality team sport since half the players on the team are new and haven’t been in the system long enough for it to be more organized than a pickup game.

I hate this era of college football. Half the time I go to bed before the LSU game is over with. I would have never done that five years ago.

Money is the problem!

At this point, I say put a salary cap on coaches. Pay all college athletes a salary. (Yes, the Heisman winning QB gets paid the same as the backup women’s backstroke swimmer) Send the rest of the money to the Academic side…because you know, college and stuff.
