While popularity is through the roof, NFL attendance is the lowest it has been in 10 years. It seems like Goodell and others are confused by this. They're offering instant replay to be shown in stadium when it's a close play. Do these guys not realize that the average fan doesn't want to spend almost half of their weekly paycheck to take their family to a game? Prices for tickets, concessions, and parking are just ridiculous. Don't get me wrong I love being in the atmosphere and I'll choose going to the game over sitting on my couch, but the opportunity cost of not being there live<<<< drinking 6 beers for the cost of 1 if I were at a game and being able to flip to the other games rather than spend a couple hundred.

Outside of the economy I can think of several reasons why attendance is down:

- Technological advancements .. in size/quality of televisions being sold, accessibility of content

- Fantasy sports .. some people care more about just the results rather than how the game plays out

- People are lazier nowadays

So Goodell should just do nothing about it?

Probably not a lot but I'm sure there are ceilings and floors for each range of ticket across the NFL. It's mainly a gripe against the greedy owners.

I think on top of this the in-stadium product is pretty lackluster. It just doesn't have the same feel of being an "event" that a college game does IMO.

I've never watched an NFL game and thought, "man it would be really cool to be there right now." But I find myself wanting to visit Camp Randall for no reason other than the experience, and ND, and the Horseshoe. The NFL product is entirely based on the play on the field, and TV delivers that better than being there live.

Much cheaper with HD tv and to buy a case of beer. O usually just go for the tailgating now

Very true. Other than your big name teams who are successful, the in stadium atmosphere just seems boring.

I don't think people are lazier, they just have access to so many games at home

I'd rather watch from home then in the stadium for an NFL game. The reverse is true for CFb for me. I Iike the NFL much more then CFB but it is not a fan friendly experience at the stadium like CFB or MLB.

Yeah I can throw a nice party with booze and food for the same price of two tickets...and that's if I pay for everything. Most of the time people would bring stuff. Watching in the comfort of a house with a nice HD TV with a bunch of friends with good, cheaper food and booze is really hard to pass on. I will say I actually love the atmosphere of a real game. Superdome and Saints is a lot of fun to watch live; however, everyone has a price and sometimes these tickets and expensive food and drinks just aren't worth it to me.

and you always have the issue of people there just to get bombed. The NFL game day crowd demo has shifted more to a 18-35 year old range. More fights and more shite housed drunks than their used to be and its even worse when the team sucks and tickets are cheap.

The biggest problem is that the very thing that has made the NFL a monolith- tv ratings and thus tv contracts- is killing game attendance in most places.

Great tv sport for the league and the viewer because of the constant commercial breaks. Boring live for the same reason, then add the traffic/parking hassle plus the cost and why not watch in hd from a couch. More bells and whistles in the stadium that are already available at home won't help either

Let's face it, the product isn't as good as it was 20 years ago, either. The creeping "Goodel-ization" of pro football is slowly sapping it's appeal. The elimination of any semblance of defense (defenseless receivers, Tom Brady rules shielding QBs, ticky-tack helmet contact fouls) are frustrating to core fans. Personally, I have gotten to the point where I'm ambivalent about watching pro football on TV. No way will I pay nig money to see that product.
