LIV Golf funding is officially dead (update pg.3)

The long-term funding for LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed breakaway golf tour, has been in question for several weeks, ever since Saudi officials outlined a financial future that did not mention ongoing sports investment. Now, according to a new report in the Wall Street Journal, players will be notified Thursday that funding is officially coming to an end.
The WSJ reports that the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), which has poured billions into the tour over its four-plus years of existence, will end its funding as of the end of this season. The loss of PIF backing would all but certainly end LIV Golf in its current incarnation, with small fields of highly-paid players competing for massive tournament purses.

Does that end the Oklahoma Smash LIV GC before it even starts.

It worked. Phil took a bunch of shite for taking Saudi blood money. Tom Brady and a bunch of NFL players were gonna do it last month( just had a slight war detour) and there was barely any backlash. The washing is complete.

This was so predictable. Good ridance.

It’s all the other stuff they’ve been getting too… WWE, a World Cup…

Yea I am very curious as to if this was a legit venture or some type of money washing/laundering scheme.
Also I am curious to see what SA came out with on the recent budget, they have/had some audacious plans.

Well yeah. Once somebody takes all the heat the rest line up with their hands out for their payday.

While this seems likely, it’s hardly certain. By all accounts, LIV will attempt to have a 2027 season

Its dead. Thank god. No real golf fan watched this.

Who’s paying for the purses?
Who’s paying for the massive overhead?
Nobody watched or went to these events or bought gear. PIF operated LIV at a massive economic loss to realize non-economic gains (sportswashing, satisfaction). That’s the only investor profile that would ever take this on. No one else is jumping in to invest in this. LIV is dead

You’d think the big names had lawyers and agents savvy enough to see this as a possibility and structure against it.

What would a large corporation have to gain by signing up to be a LIV sponsor/investor? They can’t even get on real TV.

The signing bonuses alone absolutely dwarfed whatever money they’d otherwise make on their prior tour over 5+ years. It would not be unfair for LIV to not provide explicit protections over the out years because the economic benefit at signing was already comically generous well above what they would otherwise receive

That tour sucked and had no rizz. Congratulations to all the players that took the money though.
