Nice guy by all accounts and he has a history with the Jags but this just seems like a weird hiring, especially coming off the one year Urban Meyer experiment.
OTOH, even if he doesn’t succeed here I wouldn’t hold it against him because the Jags are apparently one of the more dysfunctional franchises this side of Cleveland, Detroit, or the Jets despite the occasional AFCCG appearance.

Maybe they aren’t having a ton of qualified guys banging on the door

This is the ultimate mid-major college move.

Seems like a good fit. I think he'll do well.. relative to the Jaguars. If I was a Jags fan I'd be excited about the hire - rather than one of the many retread guys floating around.
He didn't leave town well liked. Those sentiments could arise again, possibly quicker than someone with no affiliation to the area. His 3 years in tampa were the jameis 30/30 season and 2 years of tom brady. It's difficult to read his influence there. It's an uphill battle with how bad the roster is, so not expecting much. We'll see if he makes it through year 3, but the jags have made worse hires at head coach. One coaches my o line now

I actually like Leftwich, but it's hard to get a read on him as a coach. He was OC when Jameis threw 30 picks and I'm really not sure how much credit he can have for coaching Brady. I just think about Adam Gase getting jobs simply for coaching Peyton Manning and we saw how that worked out.
I hope it works out for him though, he seems like a great guy

Also, playing ability =/= coaching ability.
Almost inverse relationship no?

If you have elite physical ability it can cover up mental deficiencies. Whereas if you're not that good (by NFL standards) you have to outsmart the opposition in order to survive.
Backup QBs also help the coaching staff run the offense so it's a great launching point.
Other problem for great players is they have a harder time understanding why lesser players can't do something. Singletary's assistants always had to tell him during film sessions, "He isn't you".

dude got hired for “coaching” Brady I bet this will end well for Jacksonville…
So did Weis McDaniels and BOB, the latter 2 have been mentioned as candidates again so…

I could see McDaniels getting some looks, by why in the world, after the complete destruction of the Texans, would BoB ever get a shot at another NFL HC gig?

Because he was a terrible GM but not a bad coach. He made the playoffs 4 times 2 of those with dog shite QBs. Plus the Texans are a clown show on their own.

Uhhh..your point? What success have any of those three had in the NFL as a HC? I guess BOB did ok but he’s not even in the league right now and if he does come back he’s likely not getting a HC gig.

Will he be the first flat bill coach in NFL history?

That 3 other guys who coached Brady got HC jobs

Then why do their names come up as potential candidates again? Not Weis obviously but he did get another college jobs even after flaming out at ND. And BOB will get a HC job again maybe in college but he’s certainly not coming back to the pros as a coordinator.

Hopefully this isn't Adam Gase 2.0

BoB is a good coach, just a terrible GM.

The NFL loves retreads.

Seems like complete 180 from Urb
Going from a guy that thought his college accomplishments meant shite in the NFL to a guy whose had exposure to the NFL for twenty years should make a big difference. The roster just needs about a half dozen more quality players on the roster to be competitive.
