Lebron has more if you take Shaq’s impact out of the equation

It's fitting the most overrated player ever would hide behind a team stat

Millennial Lakers fans hold Kobe in higher regard than anyone else, and his death only solidified their sentimentality toward him.

But yeah, they should go look at Shaq’s stats during those three straight finals they won. Or the fact that Kareem won five titles and three MVPs as a Laker.

Kobe was only marginally better than peak TMac or AI.

People get so fixated on individual stats. There is an entire end of the basketball court where the only quantifiable metrics are blocks and steals. But obviously, playing defense is more than just blocks and steals.

Here’s some individual accolades for you. Only 4 players in NBA history have been named 1st Team All Defense 9 (NINE) times:
Kevin Garnett
Gary Payton
Michael Jordan
Kobe Bryant

Here’s some more individual stuff. Only 3 players in NBA history have been named 1st team All NBA 11+ times:
LeBron James
Karl Malone
Kobe Bryant

Only one guy on both those lists above.

Well, when you hold the all-time scoring record by a large margin, what do you think will happen.

TMac and AI couldn’t finish their careers as one-team guys

lulz, Jerry West says hello. 15 years as a player and then built six championship teams as an executive for the Lakers.

LeBron has a higher three point percentage (34.8% to 32.9%) for his career on more three point shots than Kobe (6,930 to 5,546).

I know that actual stats hurt the More Sports Board's absurd hatred of Lebron James. But you can easily check the career heat mapfor Lebron James for yourselves.

LeBron does average an absurd 67.3% on shots around the basket, that's over 10% higher than the League average. So apparently LeBron is pretty damn good at making those "hard to miss" shots.

These dudes have Bron Derangement Syndrome for sure.

Do you think sportswriters are capable of over or underrating players?

Ahhh there it is.. the ole “I don’t like the facts presented here, so let me discredit the opinions of people who make a living covering basketball in favor of the stat book” argument.

I can’t wait to see MSB threads in 10 years talking about how Steph Curry wasn’t the best shooter ever.. “hell there’s 10+ guys who have a higher 3 point % in their career.. His brother Seth was the better shooter..”

Well, we know guys who lost MVPs and other awards because sportswriters didn't like them.
I just asked the question.

You’re not wrong. He’s probably a lower top-20 (i.e., 15th-20th) player of all-time. Which, yes, means he’s a legend/all-time great.

But his premature death (RIP) and people’s hate of Lebron (who’s 2nd all-time, NOT better than Jordan) enhances Kobe’s reputation. Kobe’s widely considered top-10 all-time (incorrect) and I’ve even seen some rank him 2nd all-time, which is absolute lunacy.

Like 70% of LeBron points are dunks. Hard to miss those. Kobe was an actual shooter lol
According to BBRef, LeBron has 2,194, which would account for about 10.8% of this points. In addition, about 1/3 of his points have come from jump shots 10 or more feet from the basket. If you add FTs, that is about 54% of his points taken from shots 10 or more feet from the basket.
