Says he had an irregular heartbeat the other night and it prompted him to decide to just retire.

I'm shocked.

I have to wonder if there are other circumstances for him to just shut it down right away. I would think he'd at least want a chance to try and get a ring.

Regardless, props to him.

Don’t blame a brother ducking out when it comes to any kind of heart irregularity. Nothing left to prove to warrant even negligible risk.

Possibly, either way that's a scary situation. Heart issues are a big mind frick after you catch one, every time you get it beating fast you are constantly wondering "is this it?" especially when it involves AFib

great effort kinda guy but never really elite. had a good run in portland but never filled the role in san antonio like he was expected to.

mid range guy in a 3 pt game. had a good career but not a great career. the spurs have been better with him out of the lineup

An irregular heartbeat alone isn't enough to cause this without knowing the underlying issues, but I read this on Wikipedia:

quote:

In 2007, Aldridge was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a heart ailment. He missed the rest of the 2006–07 regular season in order to monitor the problem and correct it.[96] Prior to the 2011–12 season, Aldridge once again underwent surgery to correct complications associated with his heart condition.[97]

Sounds like this has been an issue his whole career. Hopefully he can find treatment and settle into a healthier lifestyle.

I think retirements like this will become more and more common. Despite the horror stories, most professional football, basketball, baseball players are way better with their money and investments these days, and most earn a ton over their careers. So less likely guys will keep playing for the paycheck in latter years, especially those who care about their long-term quality of life.

Outside of football I think the average person really underestimates how bad being a professional is on the human body. Those guys push themselves to their absolute limit and then some because they know that big check is right around the corner.

I remember listening to a Joe Rogan episode once where the guy was explaining how the tour de France is completely unrealistic for a normal person to go through and PED use is almost the only way you can get through the course like the pros do. Even after that it's still really bad for your body.

I'd retire too if I was around Kyrie and Durant all day.

Only thing I care about is tyrus Thomas owning him in the elite 8.

My favorite Blazer until recently

He carried the Blazers from the end of the Roy era till Dame started to get up to speed. I hate the phrase “on fire when they’re on” with professional athletes because it applies to all of them but it was the definition of Aldridge. His Games 1 and 2 vs HOU in 2014 were so much fun to watch.
