Why would the Ravens trade for the inferior QB?

For a decade, I’ve been 100% team Tom Brady was more valuable than Bill Belichick.

Tom’s last season in NE, and Lamar’s (plus many others) season this year has shown that QB play alone can’t get it done. Tom had no real threats at wideout positions. Lamar this year lost his right tackle and right guard to retirement and injury. Hollywood Brown is great at getting open. Not so great at catching the ball.

In 2019, Lamar’s completion percentage was higher than Mahomes, Rodgers, J Allen and TB12. The Ravens will address the oline and wideout positions in the offseason, and I would put my eggs in Lamar’s basket. People act like they just handed him the mvp trophy last year like a month after he turned 23. He’s got a lot of career left in him.

Same reason they drafted one I guess.

Lamar sux. He'll continue this playing decent during the year and sucking it up on the playoffs. Ravens will never win shite with him at Qb.

Gamecock Alum is an autist but I’d like to post it again so everyone is sure: Deshaun has taken his (shitty) team to the same round of the playoffs as Lamar

Riiiight. ESPN will say he needs to get paid b/c he's black. Not b/c he won the MVP at age 23 and is 30-7 as a starter.

“Shitty team” lol they didn’t make it to the playoffs this year without DeAndre Hopkins. Lamar is likely to never have a WR as talented as DHop in his entire career.

Ravens were like top 3 or 4 in total defense last year. I dunno if the Texans were top 20

They were also rolling with Carlos Hyde as their feature back and a mediocre line

Probably. They’ll pay millions for a QB who will never win a SB, get hurt, and butcher the English language. But it’s ok because Black QB!

You think a 23 year old QB who has already won an NFL MVP isn't worth a record breaking contract, b/c he may never win a SB?
Have you looked at the highest paid QB list? Mahomes, Wilson, and arguably Watson are the only QB's you take over Lamar (considering age).

Rank Salary QB Team
1. $45 million Patrick Mahomes Chiefs
2. $39 million Deshaun Watson Texans
3. $35 million Russell Wilson Seahawks
4. $34 million Ben Roethlisberger Steelers
T5. $33.5 million Jared Goff Rams
T5. $33.5 million Aaron Rodgers Packers
7. $33 million Kirk Cousins Vikings
8. $32 million Carson Wentz Eagles
9. $31.4 million (tag) Dak Prescott Cowboys
10. $30 million Matt Ryan Falcons

No he isn’t worth a record breaking contract because he has not led his team to any type of postseason success despite winning all these regular season games. He shouldn’t be rewarded with a record breaking contract for losing 3 out of the 4 playoff games he has been in and playing poorly in those 3 losses.

That is your opinion, but it's not how the NFL works.

Fully guaranteed money at signing
Rank Guaranteed at signing QB Team

1. $94.5 million Matt Ryan Falcons
2. $78.7 million Aaron Rodgers Packers
3. $73.7 million Deshaun Watson Texans
4. $70 million Russell Wilson Seahawks
5 $66.47 million Carson Wentz Eagles
6. $63.082 million Patrick Mahomes Chiefs
7. $62 million Ryan Tannehill Titans
8. $60.5 million Matthew Stafford Lions
9. $57.04 million Jared Goff Rams

QB's get paid!
Ryan Tannehill got paid based off his playoff record (one win vs Lamar).
Carson Wentz didn't even have to win to get paid.
Goff got paid!
Dak is going to get paid.

None of them have had Lamar's success (NFL MVP).

You still want to argue Lamar shouldn't be paid?

Yeah I guess decent is one way to describe being the MVP and being the first QB in NFL history to have multiple 1,000 yard rushing seasons, not to mention having a higher career Passing TD% mark than all but 3 guys in NFL history.

This board has had some trash takes but this one about Lamar Jackson not being a good QB has to be an all-timer.

Facts! Especially considering he's younger than Patrick Mahomes, Baker Mayfield, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen.

Don’t they have the fifth year option for after next year? He was picked in the first round. Don’t see why they would do the deal now l, but I guess they could try to do it now to save a little money.

Teams have to exercise the 5th year option before that player begins the fourth and final year of his original rookie contract. Which is this off-season for Lamar.

If they don’t exercise that option, then Lamar hits free agency after next season.

If they do, then Lamar’s salary for the 5th year (2022) will be guaranteed around $20-$22M. The exact amount is the equivalent to the Transition Tag, or the average salary of the top 10 QBs.

If they don’t exercise the option, then they are going to pay a lot more than $20M in 2022 if they have to franchise him after year 4.

It makes sense to go ahead and extend this off-season so some of the salary cap hit can be spread out over his rookie contract salary. For example, any signing bonus would be counted against the 2021 cap.

His extension wouldn’t kick in until 2023. If it’s a 4 year extension, then Jackson is under contract for the next 6 years. He’ll still make less than $2M in 2021, and around $20M in 2022. The huge money in a new contract won’t kick in until 2023, but the Ravens will be able to spread some of that cap hit over the next 6 years, instead of only 4 years of the extension, if they sign him this off-season.

I don’t feel like anybody is saying he’s not “good“. They are just concerned with paying him top 5 QB money and also accurately disagreeing with your cold take of the year that he is somehow better and should be paid more than Deshaun Watson.
