And don't open the transfer portal window until after the national title game.

This won't line up with most school's academic calendar.

LSU starts spring classes January 11. I imagine that's about the same at most other schools.

First round CFP games need to start the weekend after conference title games. Yes, I know people want Army-Navy game to have its own day, but times have changed. Then every subsequent round needs to only have 7-9 days in between. CFP is just going to have to go up against the NFL in some time slots so the CFP semi's can take place on New Years and the title game will be played before spring semester starts.

Coaches have always left right after the end of the regular season for better jobs. Rich Rod left west virginia for michigan before their bowl game that year and I'm sure there's a hundred other examples of coaches doing it.

So now an up and coming coach can't accept a big time job offer until 3-4 weeks after early signing day
The good news is this can be offset by a coach not formally accepting the job and laying the groundwork to poach the players he’s forced to be around until he takes them to that next job

Ultimately this isn’t really in anyone’s interest

If they are calling not coaching a bowl game as leaving midseason then that is one of the dumbest things i have ever heard of

His team was still alive for a national championship

While I agree with most of your post, there are a few problems.
quote:

don't open the transfer portal window until after the national title game.
You can only do this from an academic perspective if you have the national title on like 1/5, which I don't necessarily disagree with. That would allow kids to take their visits and make decisions, still rather quickly.
quote:

No other sport in the world has free agency open in the middle of their playoffs.
College baseball does, which they also need to fix.

Another huge problem with the Act.
quote:

(3) FOOTBALL ATHLETIC PERSONNEL — The term "football athletic personnel" means any individual employed by, contracted with, or otherwise engaged by an institution who provides coaching, instruction, recruiting, roster management, or training as the head coach or a coordinator, including an offensive, defensive, or special teams coordinator, of student athletes who are members of or participate with the varsity sports team for intercollegiate football of the institution.
You're telling me if the offensive coordinator for a 6-6 team or a team not in the playoffs, but instead a team that has a December 30 bowl game, has been hired to coach a P4 program, they can't get to work right away on that? His entire team can actively be in the portal and start receiving paychecks from another universirty, but the coordinator can't start doing his next job?

Is mid-season defined as anything before the 7th game is played? Or is mid-season anything before the team completed its final regular season game? Or is it mid-season all the way until the bowl game is played?

This would fix everything and the Kiffin situation never would have happened like it did. I'm sure players would say if they wait that long, they wouldn't be able to enroll in their new school before spring semester started. Well, maybe those are the breaks from transferring (you can't join your new team until the summer). Still better than having to sit out a year.

I just don't see how you can put no restrictions on the players with movement yet hold coaches to a completely different standard and go as far as suspending them for an entire season for changing jobs too soon. No way that survives judicial scrutiny

so what? why do they need to be enrolled in the spring semester? They got their wish in not having to sit out the entire next season. Missing spring football seems like a fair compromise if that's an issue. plenty of grad transfers didn't join their teams until the summer in the past (Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts for example)

I repeat there is zero … ZERO … chance of this bill surviving a court challenge if it passes and everyone connected with it knows it, this is election year pandering to pissed off college sports fans.

I hope someone else sues and they also have to keep coaches until the end of the year too, also no one is allowed to transfer before said date.

Lock in date

Then no university should be allowed to fire a coach midseason either.

Seems the American Football Coaches Association would push back pretty hard against this. Let Congress get involved and this is the type garbage you can expect.

You can blame anything you want, but the fact is still Kiffin left his team for another in the middle of a playoff run.
