Kelvin Sampson Legacy Narrative......

ESPN and a few other outlets praised Kelvin Sampson prior to the championship game.
They basically said his legacy is established even if he never wins a NC.
Not even getting a shot off with 17 seconds to work with doesn't help their case.

Those last 2 possessions coming out of timeouts were really really bad.
Seems like someone with as much experience as Sampson would have a “special” play he could pull out in that situation.
Granted, UF was getting after it on D.

They were...but the UH guards just farted around with the ball 28 feet out and didn't seem to have much urgency to their movements.
Play before that, a big faces up, dribble drives and gets the ball knocked off his leg.

He is a cheater and should be treated as such! As far as im concirned houston has an asterisk next to this final 4 since he has such a huge history of cheating! No telling what he has been doing there to get them so good so quickly!

That seems to be one of the main tenets of their offense.
I didnt catch any regular season games by Houston, but that was the main thing that stuck out to me watching the tournament. Every possession started 30 feet away from the basket.

Like pretty much every successful college basketball coach over the last 7 decades?

This is his eleventh season at Houston.

They ran a set. There were two bigs setting screens near the top of the key and neither managed to screen Clayton. He came through lightning fast late to contest the shot. It almost looked like Clayton and Haugh miscommunicated whether they were going to switch out up top, so Clayton had to bust it late to get out there.
Clayton made another winning play. Dude is the man. Of course the Houston guy who caught the ball made a huge mistake, but I wouldn't blame that on the play call.

People tend to really over exaggerate coaching, end of the day it is up to the players and no one else. They either make the play or they don't.

Just re-watched it. Yeah, they had 13 screening for the guards. But even best-case scenario if he had accomplished more with the screens, their guards are still jacking up a 3 from a few steps behind the line with 3-4 seconds left and they had very little time for an offensive rebound putback.

Yeah they let too much time off the clock, but honestly Houston is such a great rebounding team your best chance at getting a really easy 2 is probably by throwing up an open 3.
Clayton had a monstrous close but the 3 was there and there was still time for a tap in. Don’t think Sampson did anything wrong.

UF killed Houston on plays coming out of a timeout. There were several times in the 1st half alone, whether team timeout or commercial break, UF would run a set that Houston was just boggled with. That is largely a mechanism of coaching.
Doc Rivers used to get killed on plays coming out of a timeout too. I'm not going to pretend that I watched Houston any more than March Madness, but that did stand out to me last night. Sampson is clearly a great motivator, and the players seem to love him, but he needs to find some basketball nerd to help him with those situations. Even last night, they were coming out of timeout and the commentators mentioned that Sampson didn't draw up a play on his white board, he simply wrote "TOUGHNESS" and did a rah-rah talk.

Exactly. Took him 5 years to build it up to a system that it is now.
He has overcome the commuter school label that is more than a label. He is able to recruit here.
All that said, without a championship here his legacy is a “nice run”. Bringing UH its first NC ever is a legacy.

What he was or is doing is no different than what Coach K, Roy Williams, Calipari, Calhoun, or any other basketball coach has done. The sport has been defined by cheating since forever.

Not a convincing statement unless he's hiring hitmen to injure other players or involved in gambling issues like throwing games or shaving points.
Buying players is allowed. And has been done with a wink and a nod since before Wooden won at UCLA
