Kansas has hired Buffalo's Lance Leipold as its next head football coach, the school announced on Friday. This marks the end of a search -- the beginning of which spans back to mid-March -- for both a new athletic director and head coach. Kansas fired coach Les Miles on March 9 amid allegations of misconduct during his time at LSU. The university then fired athletic director Jeff Long, who hired Miles. Travis Goff, the former deputy AD at Northwestern, was hired to lead Kansas' athletic department earlier in April.

Taking over a difficult situation isn't new to Leipold, who has a 37-33 record in six seasons with the Bulls. That by itself doesn't nearly tell the whole story, however. When Leipold took the Buffalo job following the 2014 season, it was considered one of the hardest gigs in the Football Bowl Subdivision with the program earning just two winning seasons since 2000. By Year 3, Leipold had Buffalo at 6-6. That was followed by two straight bowl appearances in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, Buffalo went 6-1, won the MAC East and was led by running back Jaret Patterson, who was tops in the country with 178.7 yards per game.

Leipold made the massive jump to Buffalo from Division III powerhouse Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he made the national championship game seven times in eight years (2007 - 2014), winning six. Between 2009 and 2011, the Warhawks went 45-0 and won three straight national titles. Hiring a DIII coach, no matter how successful he was, was seen as an unconventional path for Buffalo at the time. Now at Kansas, Leipold will try to conjure up some more program-building magic for a program that desperately needs some.

"I am very thankful to Chancellor Girod and Travis Goff for providing me this opportunity to lead the Kansas Football program. It is an exciting and humbling opportunity, and this is a day I will never forget," Leipold said. "We are going to build this program through developing players, discipline and determination. The philosophies engrained in our programs along the way will be key as we turn this around. This is a program that has a lot of young talent on the roster and has the infrastructure in place to succeed. The best days for this program are ahead, and my family and I are ecstatic to be a part of it. I am ready to get to work and give everything I have to the Jayhawks."

Good hire, even if it doesn't work out. He has proven that he knows what he's doing as far as program building goes. Kansas needs a program builder.

Attaching yourself to Kansas football is a career death sentence but the guy is 57. Not really an up and coming young coach. Saw a chance to get in and make his million bucks.

Could be a good fit
Part of the old Solich staff at Nebraska
Probably still has a lot of connections in that area

Great hire / he does more with less than pretty much any coach.

I’d be over the moon to get this guy if I were a Kansas fan.

Sure Turner Gill came from Buffalo, but his career was built on 1 upset of Ball State in the MAC title. Leipold built a MAC beast.

Excellent hire, I just hope they give him time.

He's going to need TIME to get everything rolling.

I'm happy for Lance. I've been friends with him since high school (we played in the same conference), we played American Legion ball together and I stood up in his wedding. He's a very high character guy. He barely missed out on the Vandy gig- the Vandy president and AD were scheduled to fly to Buffalo to offer him the job and then Clark Lea- a former Vandy player- got involved and got the job. He thought he was going to get the Illini job (he was told it was his) and then Bielema threw his hat in the ring. He thought he was going to miss out on all the open P5 jobs this off-season and then Les Miles stepped on his dick and the KU job came open. Miles made $2.5-2.6 million/yearly at KU and assuming LL gets in that ballpark he will go from about $625K/yr at Buffalo and will roughly quadruple his salary on a six year deal. It will be tough sledding in Lawrence but I'm extremely happy for the guy.

Interesting. I thought Illinois would be a great fit for him when Lovie got canned.

If anyone really wants to nitpick, Whitewater was already poised to be a powerhouse when he took over, and Buffalo gagged the MAC CG to less talented teams a couple of times.

That said, still a great hire by KU IMO. He knows how to win and recruit, so I hope they give him a fair amount of time to rebuild that mess.

He’ll go 2-10, 3-9, 0-12, and be gone after the 2023 season.

Hell, he might get an extension with those records.

Idk. Whatever happened to that Ball St QB that was pretty hyped as an NFL QB prospect until Turner Gill's Buffalo team stole his soul?

3 years=
but I'm going in a different direction, he leaves for a better job. Miles' recruiting was good, Leipold will have some talent to work with. He gets Kansas to a bowl game within his first three years.

He will last at least 4 years.

This is the kind of coach they should've hired the first time.
