their schedule makes it a near foregone conclusion they're in the playoff given what's coming back, but they're extremely impressive on paper. i'll be rooting against them, but notre dame is as good as anyone we have heading into 2026.

I’m an SEC and ACC fan. I want the SEC to be good again because I have no care for Indiana, Penn State, Iowa, or Ohio St. But, I actually watch the games and anyone who can take away their own bias can see NIL and the portal has collapsed the SEC juggernaut.
The SEC is more soap opera now than winning. Instead of talking about games and players the SEC has become the Lane Kiffen show and the Deboer countdown show. Where is the Heisman QB talk? Where is the defensive stopper? Sure, a lot of teams have hope but that’s a far cry from knowing.

Yeah, Alabama got embarrassed by 5-7 ACC FSU, was completely obliterated by Indiana, and went 7-1 in the SEC.
The SEC has gone 3-6 in the 12-team CFP in games not against each other (the wins were Tulane, Arizona State and Clemson) and hasn’t won a semifinal game since 2022. ND itself provided one of those 6 losses against the SEC Champ.
This thread has a lot of SEC fans who have yet to come to acceptance that mid-2020s SEC football isn’t the same as it was 5-25 years ago.

I don't think it's a hot take. The SEC is good at the top with GA, TX and OU. But ND can hang with those teams. This is a new era. Anyone can win it now. The days of "ND will never win a natty" are over, IMO. They will compete for titles on a yearly basis now.

The transfer portal and NIL has gutted the bottom half of the SEC (and every other conference as well), which is where the SEC tough schedule mythos came from in their golden era.
ESPN rankings are a self-fulfilling prophecy to protect their #1 product though, so they will have 1000 articles about "look at every SEC team in the preseason top 25!" so that when Alabama beats "top 25" Mississippi St who is 3-9 they can pad their resume.
ETA: Pate is right, and the hype for ND is warranted. Replacing Love and Price is impossible, but they are better in every other position across the board than last season and don't start off on the road to a team that played in the national championship with a QB getting his first career start in the rain and then following it up 2 weeks later against another playoff team while also breaking in a new DC.

I agree that the BIG isn’t what the SEC use to be. But that doesn’t matter because that is all history, No different than when Army, Navy, Princeton, and Rice were winning Natties. It’s a totally different era. Just because we remember the hot Jasmine Bleeth doesn’t mean she’s hot today.
The SEC absolutely dominated when the NCAA stopped enforcing its rules and the usual suspects were buying the Cam’s of the world to win.
That entire system is now dead and the sport is better for it because now every fanbase has hope to buy better players. Some will and win and some won’t and lose. But fanbases like Indiana who suffered for 70 years will grow and interest in them will grow. Same for many others, Other programs who traditionally won 8plus games will fall and their fanbases will begin the slow decline. I have lived it with my team and it’s not fast but it’s a slow decline and then a decade goes by and bam you have 40K in the stands instead of 70K. I’m looking at Auburn, Florida, Penn State type schools who have already seen several years of decline. Sure, new coaches bring a hope, but the reality is those places just aren’t getting the same caliber player now that everyone is buying.

Penn State was just in the semifinals and a play away from the national title game just 2 seasons ago. They’ll be just fine

Hey dumbass, two things:
1) I cited numerous numerous advanced stats / metrics and you picked out the one that said “Vegas.”
2) If ND was overvalued by Vegas, then people would bet against them and it’d hurt Vegas because ND wouldn’t cover, not the other way around. UGA and ND was a pick-em in the CFP, and Vegas made a lot of money because a ton of dumbasses like yourself thought “SEC! SEC!” and bet the vast majority of the money on UGA in that game.
No, Vegas is not always searching for “50/50” bets. They’re trying to make money, and they’re doing it with consideration of actual professional gamblers, not a kid betting $5 on FanDuel from his dorm room. There’d be arbitrage and it’d self-correct if things were way off.

ND would be a tier 2 program in the SEC. All the advanced metrics in the world vs the armed forces doesn’t change that.
