Why is there so much confusion about what the old record was lol.

Every article I’ve read states he broke the world record of 3:43.13 set by Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999.
Then they had the wrong time up on the screen when they finished

I think that’s the confusion. Apparently that was not the WR. Even the announcers state it was set in Rome in 1999 by Hicham El Guerrouj (which is the 3:43.13).

WL is world leading
This is the fastest time either for the calendar year of 2026 or for Fall 2025 to Summer 2026.

And MR is meet record. So the fastest time ever run at the London Diamond League event

What’s WL mean?
It means "World Lead/Leading".
I always read it as "World's Latest (fastest time)" since it is the world fastest time kf the calendar year or the season they are participating in (indoor/outdoor)
ETA: Not sure why I. The world they weren't displaying the WR time in the box. As they said in the pre-race, he had made it known he was going to try to break the WR at this specific event and had been actively training for it.

He was wearing special shoes designed specifically for this attempt.

I remember Banniser breaking the 4-minute mile - heard it on radio late one night
went to school the next morning and nobody would believe me. Were convinced it was impossible

This is correct. Josh Kerr's previous personal record was 3:45.34 so maybe that's what is confusing people.

He's eclipsed Cole Hocker. I'm more interested in watching Femke Bol close the gap on the two leading 800 runners. She's gradually narrowing the gap since transitioning from the 400 and 400H.

He didnt even look tired

Was hoping Nuguse could chase him down but he just ran out of gas. Pretty cool for Kerr to do it in London though.

Great run by Nuguse.
Posted on 7/19/26 at 9:49 am to Zappas Stache
It was the meet record and world lead that he crushed.

That was pretty incredible.

Was coming to ask if this was the guy who got out kicked by Hocker (and almost Nuguse) in the 1500m
That race should be pretty amazing next time around in L.A.

What does this mean? Is there some magic flubber shoe that has allowed him to get the edge?
