My God. I don’t even know what to say. This is a horrible loss for their family, the team, and all of hockey.

Prayers to the family that’s awful. I know it’s their right to bicycle at night and by no means should they be at risk from drunk drivers, but with the amount of distracted drivers, angry drivers and sadly drunk drivers, mixed with how bad older people’s night vision is…no way I’m on a bicycle on roadways at night. I remember when I started driving and realizing all those years as a kid riding bikes how hard I was to see and being thankful I survived. I do like how the serious bicyclists have headlights and flashing taillights now when they ride at night…that’s a smart move.

It sounds like a driver yielded to them and the alleged drunk guy went around and killed them.

With that scenario, it's very possible they were on a bike path that required them to cross a street.

From the article it sounds like the car approached them from the rear, moved left a bit to give them space to go around them, and the drunk driver tried to pass the car on the right, hitting both of them.

quote:

The SUV in front of Higgins moved to the middle of the roadway, splitting the north and south lanes to safely pass the Gaudreau brothers traveling north on the right side of the roadway.

Higgins then tried to pass the SUV on the right and struck the two bicyclists in the rear, the highway patrol said. As a result of the collision, the brothers suffered fatal injuries.

Terrible news for that family and hockey

The Blue Jackets might be cursed - they had that tragic goalie prospect death a few years ago also

Yep. Other cars were giving the guys a wide berth to pass them safely, drunk driver got aggressive and impatient and tried to pass on the right/shoulder, and hit Johnny and his brother.
