This is a clip of a referee call on JWill that by the letter of the law is accurate, but petty in the flow of an NBA game as we can see.

But my question is, as a defender, can guys guarding a sideline simply decide to step one foot outside the line, touch the ball or player and the offense be called for a turnover?

I had no idea that rule existed and thought it was funny. JWill is a genuinely good dude too.

Why can’t defenders form a human chain with one out of bounds and locking hands they can reach an offensive player 10 feet inbounds.

Me thinks the NBA will need to clarify this rule. It had no impact on game so was hilarious when it happened.

Precisely. We've all seen countless plays where an offensive player is in the air or in play throw a ball off a defender out of bounds. Ball given to the offense. Right? So why can't the defense reverse the whip? Just made my analytical brain malfunction when I was watching lol

I think the rule is the ball is out....on the defender.

That is a terrible call by the ref. That's the type of thing where if it is the rule, you explain it to the guy after you let it go.

And I'm just responding. The ball is in bounds. Player in control is in bounds. Player then makes contact with a player out of bounds...

Why is it only a turnover if you're on the same team, relative to the clip? Why wouldn't the defense use this logic against the offense 10 times a game?

I just told you why

Ball would be out on the defender, meaning the offense just gets the ball back.
I'm sure there's some scenarios where it would make sense. Force them to inbound/set up your defense etc. But pointless for the most part

Would it though?

If offense has ball and touches a defender out of bounds (all in theory) then in my mind the ball goes to defense.

Reason being is the offense has the ball and by extension the defender is an out of bounds marker. Think of defender as the court OOB line only a moving one. So if offense touches OOB line (person) then ball goes to defense.

At least thats how I imagine it going in theory. To me it didn’t matter who the OOB player was last night, they are an extension of OOB and you can’t touch. Once the guy with ball control touches its out on them.

NBA should clarify this rule because most had no idea it existed until last night. Or had forgotten.

but that is incorrect. By rule it's the player that is out of bound who's causing the ball to be out of bounds. Offense retains possession.

All of my basketball coaches from youth through high school would tell us to plant a foot in out of bound territory when cutting off a ball handler going baseline. Contact would be made, but out-of-bounds was never called.

Would it not be a foul?

Holy hell, are you really this dumb that you don’t see the difference?

A player in bounds is in control of the ball. A player with a foot out of bounds doesn't initiate contact, the offensive player does. Who's ball is it?

Lol, why would an offensive player with the ball be initiating contact with a player from the other team who is out of bounds? I play hoops 2x weekly at 40 and literally can’t think of a guarding position where the defender was stepping out of bounds and the offensive player wouldn’t just avoid him unless it’s a trap, at which point, you wouldn’t initiate contact, you’d pass out of the trap to the open man

By rule, it would be out of bounds, but in reality, it’s a one in a billion occurrence that anyone would contact the defender who has put himself out of bounds in order to create the call

Nevermind...I posted and misunderstood the video vs. the question.

It does amaze me that they'd call that but go entire games without calling blatant traveling violations.

shut the hell up. One of the biggest issues the nba has is not actually following the fricking rules of the game.
"oh well, it didn't really affect the play so why call it"
BECAUSE WE HAVE RULES DAMMIT!

They never call backcourt when a player clearly doesn't establish both feet in the front court running down the court and someone passes the ball back to them.
They never call lane violations even though they happen every fricking free throw.
They pick and choose when they call travels, usually when a non star player catches the ball on the perimeter and takes off towards the goal.
a carry hasn't been called in 20 years, even though it happens every time Durant dribbles the ball.
If someone falls on the ground with the ball, it's a travel. Unless they somehow managed to fall down with one of their feet firmly still on the ground, it's a travel. This is never called. Never, despite it being a basic rule of basketball and somethign that is called at ever level of basketball except the nba, much like lane violations.

people like you say, what's the big deal? it doesn't really affect the play so why waste time calling these violations that no one wants to see slow down the game?
I say, how fricking hard is it for players to follow the fricking rules they have been following their entire life. Call the damn violations and maybe they'd quit happening.

Holy all time melt lol, how old are you?

They did call it. It was hilarious and didn’t have any bearing in a blowout game. It was something most had never seen or heard of.

You need to chill out son. Damn

Cause you never played ball, we were taught this in 8-9th grade. Why would it be ok to touch anything out of bounds while you had the ball
