Apparently I made a thread about this in 2022

I was looking for some of the more recent "NFL kickers were better in the past" threads. In that thread you'll see the type try to say it's b/c of the ball.

Nothing can ever be better than the past. Nothing

Havent they been specialized since like the 60's?

Make is a better defined target: move the sides in and put an upper horizontal bar across. It goes over that bar: no points. Maybe even defense gets the ball from where it was kicked?

Why the NFL hash marks and narrowed than college has always been strange to me. It makes kicking easier at pro level.

1) put a crossbar across the top (you have to put it in the rectangle)

2) make FGs under 40 2 pts and over 55 4 pts - 41 to 54 = 3 points

I’ve been advocating for narrowing the posts but I actually really like your idea.

How about a randomizer places the goalpost anywhere on the back ending from pylon to pylon and you don’t know where the goalposts will be until the coach declares a kick.

Came here to post this. They used to be the same width as college until the 70s.

Go to college hash marks instead.

No punts. You have to go for it on every 4th down. Only TDs should score. 1 pt each. No extra point. Safeties are automatically 4th down at the 1. You have to go for it. Kickers should leave the game and play soccer. Except for kickoffs.

so just so we’re clear, you want to eliminate all kicking in football, except for fricking kickoffs?

My suspicion is that the slightly easier kicking is offset and then some by the offensive play calling that results.

NFL hash marks are closer together to open up both sides of the field for the offense. In college and especially in high school, when you’re on a hash it limits the plays you can effectively run on the near side of the field since there’s not as much open ground there. In the NFL you have a wide area to play with on both sides of the ball.

I actually would advocate for flipping. Yes the kicker is making a more difficult kick but you are rewarding the offense for being less effective overall.

So under 40= 3 pts
Over 40=2 points

This way if you need three points to tie at the end of the game your offense can’t rest once it gets to the opponents 40. You got to get the extra yards to get the most points.

Could also force teams to consider going for it more frequently when further from goal.

How quickly we forget the couple
Years after they changed the PAT distance where every kicker forgot how to kick and everyone hated it.

They made 94% that year instead of 99% but I get your point.

Yeah I guess I mean more the way everyone felt about it when it was less of a sure thing. The second kickers start missing it becomes “why are these guys deciding games”

Unless you're Les Miles running the option.

Player who scores TD attempts the XP. Last player to have scored a TD attempts any field goals.

It's like watching pro golfers putt into manholes. It's a waste of their talent.

I don't really want to see Arena-style goalposts or anything, but I don't know what else can be done.
