I don't see it. Refs make calls and refs miss calls all of the time - even replays - regular or otherwise at every level. The replacements aren't just Joe's-off-the-street. They're seasoned referees. Objectively, I dont see a difference.
Now, the announcers and players would have you believe otherwise. After all, they are fellow union brothers of sorts. The announcers relish in looking down their nose at the calls on the field and the players like to talk about the dangers of the replacement refs but after all the gum-flapping is done there really is no difference IMO and I wish they'd just STFU. I'm tired of it.

None of the NFL refs are perfect, but they are much closer than these replacements.

Have you watched any preseason football? There was a touchback called on the 5 yardline fcol.

no they're not. Hell one of the refs is so bad he was actually fired from the lingerie football league. And none of these refs are used to the NFL rules. Which is different from whatever league they came from.

What union do you think the announcers are in?

You have these issues with regular refs as well its just that every mistake made by the replacements is magnified and then shouted from the top of the mountain unlike the blunders by the regulars.
I think most of the negativity surrounding them is generated by the negative hype and people who believe whatever is said on TV by people who are trained to sound like they're the final authority on these matters and being influenced by these announcers, commentators, and analyzes.

Even if I grant you that, regular refs don't have these issues as frequently as the replacements have had in the preseason

Keep in mind that the normal refs blew a coin toss a few years ago with Bettis. I'm sorry but it doesn't get much worse than that.

You just don't see every little mistake discussed on every talking-head show and ridiculed so roundly by the game announcers like you do with the replacements. It's six of one and half a dozen of the other. Overall it's a push as regards the outcome or quality of the games.

Do you know what a touchback is ? I'm pretty sure every CASUAL fan knows that.

2 Weeks ago maybe? One of the teams down a punt on the 4 yard line .. . THE FOUR ! the Refs called it a touch back. The ball never got close to the goal line.

A few years ago?? It was 1998.

Also, in hindsight Bettis had something to do with that mistake and deserves some of the blame.

though later sound enhancements of the audio showed that Bettis said "hea-tails" and Bettis admitted starting to call "heads" before changing it to tails

Disagree ETA an paragraph from
Peter King today.

quote:

Another story showcasing these fine, upstanding men in the striped pajamas, aka the replacement officials: I cannot say which game this story happened in, but I can tell you it did happen. Final preseason game for two teams. Official calls defensive pass-interference in front of the penalized team's bench. Head coach lambastes the official. Official picks up the flag, tells the coach he's not going to make the call. Coach is stunned.

Which raises the question.....was Peter King on the sideline standing close enough to hear the exchange or is he repeating 2nd and 3rd hand info as facts? Probably the latter since he doesn't ID the game and reporters aren't allowed in the team box.
