Is the athletic political protest unique to the US?

The whole "kneeling/not standing for the anthem, raised fist, not visiting the White House, constantly using their image to bash political enemies" thing seems to be unique to the US.

I don't follow international soccer or other sports enough to know if elite athletes in other countries are doing the same thing against their governments.

Are their throngs of Finnish hockey players slamming their government's immigration policy or Indian cricket stars refusing to stand for their anthem because they perceive their police to be racists?

If not, why is this unique to us?

Admin- feel free to move this thread if necessary. Not sure if it's primarily a MSB or PB topic.

Is protesting in and of itself not wholly American?

I mean, in most countries, you can't protest freely. Even Britain regulates speech now.

Yeah, I notice when the schedule for soccer games says 2:45 PM start, the game actually starts at 2:45 PM instead of 2:55 or 3:05. It's refreshing.

National anthems are only played before international games in the rest of the world.

Additionally, I don't think most teams visit heads of state after winning championships. It may happen on occasion but it's not a routine thing.

For Soccer games you know you’re getting around an hour 45 give or take 7-8 mins per game

No commercials. Starts at the right time and exactly 15 minute half time

Some countries if you dont' play well they'll murder you, so I imagine they are not going to be as likely to protest.

Yes, but it seems that only in the US does it become so entrenched.

And as to the people showing a few random folks from around the world protesting, it's much more systematic here. I mean, half the NFL was kneeling at one point, including almost entire teams. It's like it's expected and if you don't do it, you're weak.

The most you'll get in international soccer is people from The Republic of Ireland (James McClean) refusing to wear a symbolic poppy in remembrance of WWI.

Good point.

McClean just gets blasted the most by the media for it I guess.

Perhaps in the manner of protest and the individual nature it is, if not unique, more prototypical American.

If anything it speaks to the value of free-thought and free speech we have here. If Rapinoe wants to kneel and protest she can. She has every right to do so freely. I have the freedom to not have to support her views nor the products she sponsors. It is a fair system that we often take for granted.

Compare to another protest going on in the world right now:

That's some real stuff.

freedom of speech is uniquely American. Authoritarians are trying to change that.

Because Americans are a bunch of entitled punks. And if anything doesn't go their way or fit their ideals, they throw a fit and protest.

In Rapinoe's case, if everyone would stop responding to it, it would all go away. Outside of world cup or Olympics they all just blend back into their irrelevant lives after those big events. Rapinoe will likely play one more Olympics with national team before she retires so any newsworthy thing will keep her in the limelight.

Rapinoe idolizes her drug addicted brother who has been in prison for awhile now but apparently is now clean. He was not a model prisoner either. Who knows, maybe she thinks he got a raw deal, doubtful.

As far as her lifestyle, I don't think anyone has made her lifestyle an issue other than herself. Like we need any more reminders. We get it.

No. Just I don't think it usually involves disrespecting the anthem or flag on a national stage. Could be wrong though.
