Is it unreasonable for us as fans to expect our favorite players to show "loyalty"?

For the vast majority of players, they have no connection to the team they are on other than being drafted/traded/signed by them.
We all get mad when players on our favorite teams become stars and then leave, but are we being unreasonable?

Just some off the top of my head that angered people

Kevin Durant - no connection to OKC

LeVeon Bell - no connection to Pittsburgh

Albert Pujols - no connection to St. Louis

Shaq - no connection to Orlando

CP3 - no connection to NOLA

The list goes on and on and on.

Why should they be "loyal" to franchises they have no connection to other than they happened to be drafted or signed there?

Now that this is on the right board..

It really depends on the situation. For example. I think to a certain extent when a player like AB or Bell is in Pittsburgh for so long it seems like it is a connection built between player and franchise

No because the entire point of fandom is to be completely unreasonable

I wish they would be more loyal, but some of the complainers are the same people who wouldn't blink at an opportunity to force their family to move across country for your $2000/year raise and new job title.

No. Look, guys are allowed to take the money and get the best offer. No one is saying they can't. But if you want the fans' love, that comes at a cost... you gotta show some loyalty. It's a two-way street. Fans live and die by their teams for generation, and all they are asking is that you take a gigantic pile of money rather than an even more gigantic pile of money. If the franchise truly low balls a player, the fans usually side with the player for leaving in that case.

My only problem is when a player is purely mercenary and is then gets upset that people don't love hi mfor it. You made your bed like a big boy, now lie in it. You want love, then earn it. You don't get it for nothing.

This is the thing for me. More money and a better city would be attractive to most people. Also, the chance to win more is comparable to joining a more successful company.

Most fans would totally leave their job for more money, a more attractive city and a more successful company. For players, those things matter too.

It doesn't mean there isn't loyalty, it's just loyalty is measured along with quality of life.

This.

A fan is short for Fanatic.

Most people look at the salaries of pro athletes and think they are already over paid so why do they need more money, and when a player goes to a “better” city, it is a pit down of that fan’s city and usually hometown.

However, I don’t think athletes owe any loyalty to a city or franchise just like an employee doesn’t owe loyalty to a company. At the end of the day, they are employees in a highly competitive industry with massive amounts of turnover. If anyone should have loyalty to the fans/city it’s the owners.

Yes, it's unreasonable.

Which is why it's a rare and celebrated thing when sports stars fully embrace the city/franchise that chose them. Honestly, it's more unreasonable for them to do so (given that they're ultimately disposable assets at the end of the day).

For a star to have as intense a love affair with a city/franchise as the fanbase will almost certainly have with their star player is a very cool thing.

Yup, that's why Brayden's staying loyal to the Cyclones even though the Blasters really want him to jump over for the stretch run for the title in Panama City next month

Completely agree with this statement.
