Which is why it's a rare and celebrated thing when sports stars fully embrace the city/franchise that chose them. Honestly, it's more unreasonable for them to do so (given that they're ultimately disposable assets at the end of the day).

For a star to have as intense a love affair with a city/franchise as the fanbase will almost certainly have with their star player is a very cool thing.

Sometimes I believe it takes a major incident for pro sports stars to fall in love with a place (Ex. Brees, CP3 & Reggie Bush falling in love with NOLA after Katrina). Those typically have lasting effects on individuals.

No because the entire point of fandom is to be completely unreasonable

So are you saying no or are you actually saying yes? I'm confused.

LOL, 2/3 of your examples left.....
I’ll give you Brees, but if you think CP3 gives a shite about NOLA, I don’t know what to say

Right after Katrina he did. (Reggie Bush has gone on record about this when he was interviewed on Arian Foster's podcast)

My man

I never thought I'd see this city fall for a star as hard as we all did for The Admiral, but Manu was just so special. City and player tailor made for each other, though the Alamo City is nowhere near Bahia Blanca, Argentina.

I forget the Shea Serrano article, but he was recounting a story about how even after Manu's greatest foibles (fouling Dirk in '06; turnover prone 2013 NBA Finals), he was just one of those guys San Antonians never even thought about turning on. One of his friends had a nephew or something that suggested trading Manu during the 2013 NBA Finals, and his friend (who had just been berating Manu's play) about blew a blood vessel browbeating the kid about how you just don't trade Manu Ginobili. Because he's Manu friggin' Ginobili

The atmosphere for Manu's jersey retirement game was more electric than a lot of playoff games I've attended. And he spent half of his speech talking in Spanish and nobody moved a damn muscle until he got through Just meant a lot to us, and the way we embraced him clearly meant a lot to him.

ETA: I'd say Dirk and Dallas had a similar connection that transcended what usually happens in pro sports.

I'll say this too.

Fans want loyalty from players, but when a player is washed up and can't contribute any more, frequently have no qualms cutting him. Loyalty only goes so far on both sides.

Players are loyal to paychecks. People forget its a job for them.

How many of you are loyal to a company when another company gives you a better paycheck or personal situation?

It is unreasonable as man you have stated. We expect them to stay with the same team, and not make as much money as they can. Guys leave for more money it is bad. Guys leave like kd to win a ring, we hate them.

They only win by taking less money and staying with the club. We also don’t bat an eye too often when the nfl cuts these guys due to business reasons

Yeah.

Those guys are drafted to teams. They didn't make a choice, so why should they show loyalty? That's an emotional connection, and it's either in the athlete's heart or it's not.

It's nice when they do. I give extra credit to loyal athletes, but I don't take away from those that don't show it.

In today's day and age how many fans really expect loyalty from pro athletes?

It’s a job. If a competitor wants to pay me more to do the same job I’m gone so I don’t expect them to do any different

Can you explain?

Players regularly transfer schools. Fans bash them.
Players commit to a school then back out. Fans bash them.
Players from a city do not attend the major university in that city. Fans bash them.
Players leave early to enter the draft. Fans bash them.

What am I missing here?
