They spend a lot of time at showcases for the top end and summer ball for everyone else. High school ball is important but more from video.. College coaches at many spots are not recruiting many and kids anymore instead using the portal. They are actively telling many kids to hit juco to get bigger and stronger.

Calls from the high school coaches are weighted pretty heavily. Everyone has a “good summer” on the travel circuit but it’s not unusual to have some tooled up kid who had a “great summer” have a brutal year in his high school season and prove that he really can’t do it.

College coaches love tools but they really love guys who can perform with said tools. Lots of 5 o’clock hitters and 90+ fastballs in the world that can’t get it done in game.

When the high school coaches call colleges it’s because they have a guy who is performing at a high level and that’s worth a look for those recruiters

Both but how they do against other elite recruits is most important.

Travel baseball/soccer and AAU basketball are more important than high school ball.

Football 7 on 7s and how they do at camps is more important

High school golf basically doesn’t matter.

We are currently with a terrible travel ball organization. It will be a combo for colleges because there are many shady travel ball organizations. Also, NIL and portal have totally screwed baseball recruiting.

Be aware of what travel team you associate with.

Remember folks. Not all travel ball is created equal. College scouts aren’t attending the Orange Beach Invitational week 3 June 10th World Series to watch Jhett hit his four dingers.

There are too many travel ball organizations in general. The overwhelming majority of players have no business playing in national tournaments or paying ridiculous amounts of money to be a part of these orgs.

It's all just a way to make a buck. They've effectively killed off local leagues in a lot of areas, but at least American Legion is still around in some places. I think it could make a comeback if people figured out that most travel ball is a grift.

Agree. When you’re paying hundreds to thousands of dollars for little Maxxstyn (I’ve seen it) to play 8U travel ball, and he’s out in left field pulling up grass with a batter at the plate, it’s not that difficult to figure out.

Sooo many travel ball dads who hit their ceiling in rec ball just emptying their wallets to live vicariously through their kids. I’d feel sorry for them if 90% of them weren’t huge douchebags.

Short answer is both.

Long answer:

(Baseball and softball) College coaches love to identify and connect with top talent at “travel/ showcase” events because it’s a target rich environment. These showcases give them a list of prospects, they ID the prospects in their ranking range, and go scout.
Once they connect and ID a potential recruit, they watch EVERYTHING they do in HS to validate what they saw at the showcase.
In addition, they will also scout top HS programs known for producing talent because there’s always somebody there and it’s not a waste of time. They also leverage relationships with coaches they trust to turn them on to sleepers and the get reports on kids

Travel ball. And usually 15 is where you get offered. You have to be really lucky to just play HS and get noticed.

Shouldn't really matter. If you're a standout player, and play HS and Legion ball youre going to get noticed. Lots of families can't afford Travel Ball and Camps every other week.

If a poster takes the time to type out a long topic like this one, shouldn’t he power through and type you, your, and because instead of u, ur, and cuz?

All college coaches require you bring all your PG and USSSA rings to any official visits.

My grandson plays showcase. I’m sitting at a ball park right now waiting on him to play. I can tell you this is a money grab shite is expensive I’m here because I support him but it wouldn’t hurt my feelings if he said screw this. Bottom line if you’re good they will find you. These parents and a lot of coaches are delusional
