Is Coach K the greatest college basketball coach of all time?

behind wooden in titles but different situation. longevity, consistency, put a nobody on the map for 40 years. a case could be made especially with a championship. does a natty loss to Arkansas automatically disqualify you? lots of things to consider

One of certainly THE is a lot harder across eras just like players.

Bobby Knight is the goat. He taught Coach K how to win and be an a-hole.

Duke wasn't exactly a nobody before he got there. They played in the title game just a few seasons before he got there. In fact they almost fired him early in his tenure

Wooden
Knight
K
In that order

Nope, it's Wooden. When Wooden took over at UCLA in 1948 they had had just 3 winning seasons in the previous 22 years and a total of 13 winning seasons in 30 years of existence.
UCLA from 1919-1948 287-287 12 winning seasons of 30
John Wooden from 1948-1976 620–147 (.808) No losing seasons 4 undefeated seasons including back to back undefeated seasons with only 5 seasons with double digit losses

He's probably second behind Sam Gilbert.

Bob Knight was better. It’s easy to win all your games when you can essentially out talent every team you play 35 times a year. Knight won with some guys that weren’t considered as talented.

Yes. Duke wasn't a nobody before he arrived though.

I think Knight was a great basketball mind but didn’t he recruit really well at Indiana?
This goes back to an era where there weren’t detailed rankings of recruits and I certainly don’t know about prospects from the 70s and 80s and how well-regarded they were, other than Isaiah Thomas.
But I do know that Coach K and Knight each offered Andrae Patterson, Calbert Cheney, Dane Fife, and Corey Maggette. They both really wanted them in their squads. All of those were the equivalent of 5 star recruits, and Knight landed three of them.

Knight recruited extremely well at Indiana he was always getting Mr. Basketball etc., but I still don’t think it’s on the level of a guy like K. I’m probably thinking more recency bias now that Duke has been getting 3 5*’s a year or so for the past decade or two. A guy like Steve Alford I think was a hidden gem he found, Keith Smart was actually a transfer he got over, and he has the most known shot in IU basketball history. I really think K and Knight are probably interchangeable.

Right, I think it may be more like Coach K’s classes from 1982 to 1998 or so.
But Knight (and K) pretty much lost no one on their rosters to the pros, with the exception of Isaiah Thomas.
Again, I don’t know a ton about Knight pre 1995 or so beyond general knowledge

I was around in the days of Wooden and I do not remember any loathing of him or his program.

Knight's resume is great, but it's crazy to think how how amazing it could have been if he was able to show a little more restraint, especially in his later years.

Has to go to Wooden. Coach K is up there although I do not like him.
Coach Knight does not do it for me but I honestly have not watched many of his old games. Billy D had some great years.

Best coach or best cheater? Hard to top the Wooden/Gilbert pairing.

Knight also picked up Bird, who he very quickly ran off. His teams in 79-81. Had numberous NBA level guys on it
