I too believe that too many players are getting inducted. However, this first ballot, second ballot, third ballot bullshite is asinine. A player is either HOF worthy or he isn't

I think the fact that he put up those stats and is not associated with "juicing" will help him.

I had lunch with a colleague today who was a MLB pitcher for 8 seasons and pitched on 2 World Series winning teams. I asked him who was the best pure hitter that he ever faced and was his toughest out and he said Eddie Murray. He said he never got him out and that in fact, Murray hit him twice with line drives to add insult to injury. I laughed my arse off at that.

I always thought it was impressive that Chipper batted 3rd and anchored a World Series winning lineup as a rookie

8 year old me is still pissed Hideo Nomo won ROY over him

As a person? No.

As a baseball player? Easily.

It's usually, Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Koufax, Mike Schmidt, Gywnn, Ripken, Ricky, Griffey, Ozzie.

I don't see the electors seeing Chipper Jones in that list.

Dude Ozzie Smith is no where in the same league as the guys you mentioned. I think he is a HOFr but an avg hitter/elite defender is not the upper echelon of baseball royalty. Chipper was every bit the player Ozzie Smith was and then some. In fact, if you ask 10GMs would they would prefer, all 10 would say Chipper.

With all the love Jeter has been getting lately, a quick look at his stats and Chippers #s far exceed Jeter (and I'm a big Jeter fan).

Speaking of Ozzie, I'm curious why he was a lock for the hall of fame yet Andruw Jones probably won't even sniff it. Andruw's defense was incredible and he put up some monster numbers in essentially 11 years of full time play. I don't put much stock in BA, but his is similar to Ozzie's, their OBPs are identical, but his slugging % destroys Ozzie's.

I'm not making a case for Andruw as much as trying to understand why one player is in and the other won't get in.

I don't ever remember Andruw Jones backflipping into his position.

That's why.

There's also the fact that outfielders are a dime a dozen and shortstops, that weren't automatic outs, during Ozzie's time, were hard to come by.

Well the fact that he leads all outfielders in history in defensive WAR tells me that his defense was pretty outstanding regardless of your implication that outfielders are a "dime a dozen."

OK, let's look at the 2018 ballot...

1st year (only listing players with a chance at some point)
Chipper Jones
Andruw Jones
Scott Rolen
Jim Thome
Omar Vizquel
Johan Santana
Johnny Damon
Livan Hernandez
Chris Carpenter
Jamie Moyer

2nd

Vlad Guerrero
Manny Ramirez

3rd

Billy Wagner
Trevor Hoffman

4th

Gary Sheffield

5th +

Mike Mussina
Roger Clemens
Barry Bonds
Curt Schilling
Edgar Martinez
Sammy Sosa
Jeff Kent
Larry Walker

Based on this list alone...who is going is to push Chipper past this year? His stats and accolades are enough to get him in, plus he is a clean player in a time when players weren't so clean. Manny, Bonds, Clemens, and Sosa are still ostracized by all accounts.

I'd argue that this year's class will be Chipper, Guerrero, and Hoffman for sure. Thome has an outside shot.

I wish Andruw would go in with him as a Braves fan.

Thome should be a no-doubter, but he just really never had the media backing that others did. If he played in NY, there's no doubt that he'd be in on his first try.

Jones
Thome

Maybe:

Hoffman
Guerrero

Vlad and Hoffman were both over 70%, they will get in next year.

4 more guys were over 50%, including juices Bonds and Clemens, so they are going to take votes from Chipper.

I could envision a scenario, with HOF voters being who they are, that Chipper is in the same 70-75% range as Vlad was in his first year. Vlad is also a no-doubt HOF player in my opinion, and should have gone in on the first ballot.

yes, and what he did in NY, 2 the Mets late in the Season pretty much assured NY voters.

Writers will remember that series
