In 1980, Steve Deberg, 49ers QB, wore a backpack speaker & mic to call plays

In 1980, 49ers QB Steve DeBerg had trouble projecting his voice at the line of scrimmage.
What happened next was truly shocking.

In September 1980, before the lowly 49ers and novice head coach Bill Walsh were known as trailblazers, they devised a way to do the impossible: Make a near-voiceless quarterback sound like he was screaming.
Unlike the West Coast offense, this innovation was born of desperation.
Their starting quarterback, Steve DeBerg, had damaged vocal cords from a hit to the neck, and a throat specialist had offered a remedy incompatible with his job duties.
“He told me the quickest way to recover was to not speak for a month,” DeBerg recalled. “I said, “I’m an NFL quarterback. I have to yell over 75,000 fans. I can’t not talk.’”
The dilemma, which DeBerg faced 40 years ago this month as he competed with unproven backup Joe Montana, inspired a new and later banned communication system that’s a funky and mostly forgotten part of NFL history.
For three early-season games, DeBerg, reduced to a whisper, communicated with a speaker, amplifier and power pack affixed to the back of his shoulder pads. The bulky boombox-shaped contraption made him look odd but allowed him to easily audible and call signals.

I had never heard this story before

Me either. Strange but interesting. Better not take a sack with that thing on. Bound to hurt a bit.

Why is this the first we ever heard about this?

I can understand if this happened in the 50s and I'd never heard about it. But 1980 isn't very long ago

Didn't he have a bad arse playaction fake handoff?

Now, not so much.

I remember Steve DeBerg playing for the Chiefs in the 90’s with a cast, and pins were sticking out of the cast.

He’s lucky he didn’t take a sack and bust into flames like a fricking Ford Pinto

I think he wore this when he played for the Broncos as well, not to mention that pin in his pinky finger when he played for the Chiefs, probably the greatest backup QB of all-time not named Don Strock

Well considering how well NFL Films kept everyone up to date on anything related to historical NFL stuff I’m surprised ive never heard of this ever either.
Hated the 9ers being a Saints fan so would have called them cheaters.

This might be the most bizarre sports story I've ever heard.
Only thing cooler would've been if he had been rockin' these things over his helmet to hear the play call.
I mean if he got sacked, does he get an electro-chock?
