Admittedly I'm not a big NBA fan at all...I've been seeing all the new court designs and finally decided to google what this new NBA "In Season Tournament" and I just don't get it. Who cares about some meaningless tournament at the beginning of the season? If you want the players to play harder in early season games then shorten the season and make each game more critical.

They're trying to maximize viewership for the next media deal. They don't have a good way of competing with CFB or the NFL in the early season so they are trying to attract eyeballs with this tournament.

Nobody gets it. I was shocked at how early in the season it was. Seems like something that would have been great in December. That’s when a lot of people start actually paying attention to basketball.

But also, love it or hate it, at least the NBA is trying new things. I think the play-in at the end of the season is a great addition to the playoffs, and maybe when this gets to Vegas it’ll be fun to watch.

It didn't realize that they incorporated them as regular season games and also count for the tournament.

I think it's actually not a bad concept. Basically ripping off the FA cup from the EPL.

They should consider allowing G league or other minor league teams teams to participate.

It's over in December - just trying to get people to watch Nov/Dec games.

There really isn’t a defined goal or reason for the tournament. They sold it as a chance for teams that don’t have a chance to win a title or go on a deep playoff run to still have something to play for during the season. That sounds like a reason to keep viewers interested in March.

Now it’s a an attempt to get viewers interested in November?

I get what they are trying to do but I think it's just dumb. If you want the players to play harder and more viewers then cut the amount of games in a season. You can't polish a turd.

I just don't understand the point of it. The winner doesn't get an auto bid to the playoffs or anything. They get a small bonus of money that only really makes a difference for the end of the bench guys. The championship game doesn't count towards the standings so 2 teams will play an 83rd game and the loser doesn't even get money so they essentially play an extra game for nothing.

At the end of the day these tournament games are basically just regular season games with some window dressing. There's no real tangible reason for fans to care more about these games now than they did before. If this tourney indeed becomes a mainstay in the season, there's going to be someone that wins it and doesn't make the playoffs and it's going to look even more meaningless.

That's exactly the point of the tournament.
Trying to push NBA viewership six weeks earlier than the norm.

It is truly just a gimmick to generate buzz in the first quarter of the season which is typically a slow time for the NBA ahead of negotiating media rights as someone said. They want to get more viewers early on so they can demand more money.

It's dumb for the players who don't care that much. Now if they did something like winning team guaranteed home court advantage all the way through conference finals, then that would be something players went for.

Shortening the season reduces revenue. Which is why none of the leagues are ever doing that.

You “googled” it. That means the NBA got a hit. That’s what they want. More eyeballs, even though you didn’t watch.

The NBA is so boring now. Just a bunch of overly tatted-up dudes jacking up 3's, dunking after taking 3 steps, complaining, and the other overly tatted-up dudes on the bench ooooh-ing and aaaah-ing after some random dunk.

And then a bunch of bro-hugs by both teams for about 5 minutes after each game.
