This isn't new. Kareem doomed Milwaukee when he demanded a trade because Milwaukee didn't meet his cultural needs back in the early 70s.

Something else I've noticed about NBA free agency is that city location/size seems to matter a lot more to the players for whatever reason. In the NFL, the biggest free agent signing this offseason signed with the Vikings. When's the last time a marquee free agent signed with the Timberwolves? I've never understood what that's such a bigger deal for NBA players than it is in NFL/MLB.

I think because NFL careers are shorter and that since it has been the most popular sports league for the last 30 years means you can be anywhere in the NFL and still be a national sports figure and star. Look at Bret Favre. Played in Green Bay and he became one of the NFL's and sports biggest stars.

It's alright man, it will get better.

I can't believe this is what put everyone over the edge. So, GSW went from like 80% chance of winning to 95%, big deal. It's not like Boogie signed a 4 year deal for pennies. You're right, things will be better by 2019-2020, people just have to be patient.

This is what the NBA has been for a while. The fact people remain loyal to it is sad. Stacked was having three stars at once. Miami and Boston most recently. It got to the point you could predict the finals year in and year out. Now you have this warriors team that the league should be embarrassed it has allowed a team to assemble. There is no desire in today’s professional basketball player to have competition. The Lakers will probably add to their team next year to work toward a stacked starting five. It’s really hard to even watch this sport anymore.

I hear you. How do you think a Hawks fan feels right now?

At this point the Hawks have about as good a chance of winning the finals as the Rockets, Celtics, Lakers, etc.

There was a time that I would've been gleeful at this statement.

Let's see - you have the NBA that is a joke now.
You have college basketball and the one and done which is also a joke now.
Basketball is in disarray all around.
At least the NCAA tourney is still a fun event to watch.

sorry I was born nowhere near an NBA market. I like the Pelicans because it's a gulf coast team, but it's still like 200 miles from me, so it's hard to feel a true allegiance. Same with the NFL.

I like LeBron and I like Cam Newton. Whatcha gonna do?

He said that, but the Bucks also went from a 59 win team to a 38-win after the Big O retired. He had been there six years and didn't have much of a problem with the culture when Milwaukee was competing for titles. He demanded a trade when the team started to stink, as he didn't want to spend his prime years on a rebuilding club.

He got traded to a Lakers club that had won 30 games the previous year. Because there was no way the Bucks were trading him to his other named locale, New York. Sure, the Knicks dynasty was in steep decline, but they still had Earl the Pearl, Frazier, and Bradley. They weren't giving them a rejuvanation.

i think the issue is the amount of paycut. boogie took like a 2/3 paycut for one year. this isn't durant /lebron leaving 10-15% on the table

Realistically, how many teams were likely to make offers on him? That's my only question. NOP/LAL/WAS at the most, right?

i think BOS would have if they were able to. the reports "they didn't offer boogie" are really "they didn't get a chance to offer bogogie"

I meant moreso who would have a sizeable offer either within the cap or via S&T.

then just Nola i imagine

the lowest offer i've read reported from Nola was $16M, which is where i got the "2/3" comment

the "New Orleans didn't offer him anything" is bollocks semantics

Where was that reported? I heard that but hadn't seen a report.

I guess my point is, even if that offer was out there, we're making somewhat of a bigger deal than it really is. Because we all thought he'd get way more, it kinda feels like he turned down $50+mil for $5 when in reality, the divide from what he got and what his best offer was was probably much, much less, but still sizeable.

well that makes a little more sense, since you're in the same state...

I have never lived in a state with a pro sports team... well, not as a person over 6 years old at least. I assume most people that root for players do so because of the same reason. Especially with the NFL, having loved a certain college player.

Image. The NBA is an image driven league. All these years later people are still buying Jordans. They aren't buying Favres, Walter Paytons or Jerry Rice shoes all these years later. It's more glamorous to be in LA, Chicago, NY than it is Milwaukee, Portland, Charlotte, etc... Lots of face time on TV when playing basketball.

Also, outside of San Anontio's run with Popavich who was the last small market team to win it all without Lebron? Seattle in 79? So in otherwords unless you're a Lebron level player you won't sniff a championship unless you're in one of the big cities.
