re: I don’t understand Young being a better NFL prospect than Stroud.

Intangibles
It’s the same reason why Joe Burrow is a top 5 QB and many others with better arms, feet, etc don’t hold a candle to him.
Bruce Young has elite intangibles, plus he’s pretty damn good. He’s great at reading coverages and making things happen when a play breaks down. He also does not appear to be impacted by game pressure (time, score, situation)
CJ has mediocre intangibles and plays in a System that doesn’t require much thought. He has talent. But when he throws an incompletion or a ball is dropped. He has a certain look on his face. That might not mean much to the viewer, but it means a lot to his coaches and fellow teammates. CJ Stroud is shakeable. He doesn’t have the worst intangibles in the world, but they are extremely mediocre.

I don't think either of these guys will be super good or stars. If I was choosing one I'd go Stroud.

OSU QBs are system QBs. The proof is with Fields and Haskins. Fields was supposed to be better than Haskins as a passer. Stroud is supposed to be better than both. We will revisit this in 2 years
Or maybe quicker than that

Stroud is in a better situation, but Young was extremely overrated. He had the best OL in college football and more talent on his team across the board In 2021 which helped him win the Heisman. He then plays poorer the next season, but gets none of the blame. People just blamed the Bama OL and WRs.
Kid is a lot like Tua. Give him ridiculous talent around him and he will succeed. Without that, he will be mediocre. He also doesn’t make players around him better. CJ does.

I am just glad no one found my pre-draft post calling the Texans morons if they didn't trade down and take the best available and a shite ton of picks. And we will not even discuss how stupid I thought trading up for Will Anderson was.

Hated it as well. Stroud being years ahead of what they ever imagined cleaned that up nicely.

Also Will Anderson Jr has been pretty darn good on defense

As a lifelong Texans fan - hate it or love it - it was at least something different. In today’s nfl, your best shot is to get an elite QB on a rookie deal and good defense (see Seattle).
As a new head coach, this is honestly your only shot at success at a dumpster fire that was the Texans after D Watson. So why not roll the dice and go for it.
Hindsight 20/20 now but I loved the move when it happened

I guess the jury is still out with Anderson as a #3 overall, but at the time I figured that cost them a top 5-10 pick in 2024 by trading that #1. That doesn't look nearly as bad now as its going to be a back third of first round pick.
Posted on 1/6/24 at 11:17 pm to Basura Blanco
I can tell you don’t watch the Texans much if you think the jury is still out. Also, he is a ROY candidate on defense. What are you talking about.
Posted on 1/6/24 at 11:28 pm to LSU713Tiger
My issue wasn't whether Anderson is good or not. If Stroud was just a regular rookie QB then they'd probably be giving up a top 5 pick this year on that trade. Even if Anderson is as good as he is giving up pick 12 and 33 last year and top 5 pick this year and a 3rd is a super steep price.
Posted on 1/6/24 at 11:38 pm to saintsfan22
That’s fair and don’t get me wrong - 100% agree it was a very steep price.
But the draft is so hard to predict in terms of hit or misses on players, and your projected spot and the available players at that projected spot, are impossible to predict - So if you have the chance to get 2 guys, whom you have a ton of conviction in, at that current moment, in that current draft (with a new head coach that needs results and fill very big roster needs) - I agreed with rolling the dice and doing something different relative to the conservative bs of past Texans front office.
Edit - Pick 12 in the first last year is not part of the equation. Of course you trade the 12th for a 3rd.
