They do. And it’s not just the playoffs. Believe it or not most of these guys actually give a damn whether their team wins. At the end of your life you won’t be able to trade part of that money to go back and play with your friends on national television one more time. These kids wouldn’t get this far if this wasn’t their passion.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't in some ways, if these players playing in non-playoff bowl games are pretty damn secure in their draft position pre-bowl, don't play if not, then play, improve your draft stock, weigh the pros and cons

Not sure exactly how that works but I think a college player who is available/eligible for the NFL draft can confer with a potential agent/lawyer for draft advice even if the player has not signed a contract with said agent. I also could be wrong.

Why don’t all players in college have agents if that’s allowed?

I would definitely play. Not playing would never even enter my mind. I also wouldn't have an agent.
Like others have pointed out, if you have that other mentality why play any games once your draft eligible and your team is out of playoff contention?

As the player you have to sit out. It's your future, vs a meaningless bowl game (even if the college playoff).

Players should consider sitting out once they get to a point where their draft projection is not at risk of dropping by sitting out, and they don't think they could raise their draft projection by continuing to play.

There are a couple of angles to this:
- I would no doubt sit out if I were a certain first- or second-round pick; the potential economic value you'd be giving up at that point is too high
- On the flip side, NFL scouts have started to pay attention to (and have ascertained an NFL performance correlation with) things like leadership and passion for the sport
- Jaylon Smith might be the scare story, but he also loves to play the sport and has stated outright that he wouldn't change his decision; I don't think it's a coincidence that when the chips were down, a kid with his will to play and love of the sport managed to get things back on track, and I think his willingness to play even for an exhibition is an (admittedly, subjective) indicator of that
- Given that, there is a marginal cost versus marginal benefit trade off for bowl games for many players, and I think the trade off starts getting negative a lot more quickly than many here might suppose - a potential third or fourth round pick hasn't demonstrated the requisite physical skill to legitimately step away to justify the potential economic cost in my eyes, and I'd be questioning a kid's commitment and economic value-add to my franchise if he were a borderline third-rounder and decided to sit
- Starting at the 80th to 100th pick or so, you can improve your stock as much as hurt it in an exhibition game, including bowl games
- A kid playing for a playoff team that decided to sit would go off my board immediately, no questions asked; how badly does that kid really want to win?

There are Insurance policies for such situations. I don't know the details of how they work, but think they are fairly common.

Jaylen Smith was going to be a top 5 pick. That means his guaranteed money was going to be somewhere between $20-$30 million. He got hurt, went in the second round and got $4 million guaranteed and $700k from his insurance policy. He lost somewhere between $16 and $26 million by playing in a bowl game.

They almost never pay out the way a common sense reading would indicate. The insurance policies aren’t nearly as good as people think which is why more guys are sitting out.

They generally don't pay out the entire value of lost economic production from a drop like Jaylon Smith had or even close to it.

Now you guys are just canceling the CFP if you think you’re gonna go high?

You're seeing the beginning of the end of major college football and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Let the mercenaries who only give a shite about themselves go to a G League where they dont have to pretend to care about being a college student. Let everybody else play in 25,000 seat stadiums in front of parents, girlfriends, and alumni. I'm getting pretty tired of corporatized college athletics anyway.

Your agent has already told ya that you’re going 1st round barring a bad combine, your team is also in the college football playoffs, what do you do?
Sit out.
Who gives a shite? Honestly? But Bama fans? I can't think of a fanbase other than Bama that cares so deeply about mythical titles?
Why would a kid risk his future over nothing but for fat slobs who sit at home and drink the Pepper and eat the Chicken.
Nothing is even still sanctioned in CFB, it's still illusory. Maybe LSU fans care a bit but I've never heard the fandom defined by what some sportswriter voted them.
Why would a college athlete risk injury to placate a sportswriter to vote him into a game to placate fans over some charade.
College trophies are fricking Orange slices.
You have your life to live and a family to eventually provide for and your parents to payback.
Desperate lives give a shite about College trophies. CFB has turned into one purpose...create a resume for the Pros...since we don't have minor league baseball.
Every kid is audtioning, you think he loves your school? Doubtful, he's going where he will get the best audition. We root for temps.
CFB fans root for temps. (who don't remotely care as much as you do for the success of the favorite University you never attended.)

I might sit out.
But Alabama players don't do that. High character elite players play at Alabama.

Who cares about winning?

See my post above yours. If they don't give a shite, there's no reason for us to give a shite, and the whole thing falls apart. The NFL will have killed the golden goose and they'll have to start paying for their own farm system.
