Hypothetical split between the P5 and G5; would you have any interest in the G5?

The G5 has created a natural interest over the past 20 years just by being associated with the P5 conferences. I honestly think they would do really well for themselves in a split.

I would be more interested in a Boise State vs UCF G5 National Championship than I would be a North Dakota State vs South Dakota State FCS Championship.

I would be more interested in a Colorado State vs Fresno State quarter final game than other typical FCS match-ups.

To me, FCS College Football is a niche sport. G5, like I mentioned earlier, has created a natural interest by just being associated with the likes of the P5 conferences.

Maybe I'm off my rocker, but I think it's a very big positive. They still get to play P5 teams, and they get more eyes by playing in a playoff.

How many FCS games do you watch yearly? It would be about the same G5 games.

The only people who care about fcs games either went there or bet the game.

Same with most g5 games too tbh

From what I see, most are on ESPN3 via streaming during the regular season. I try and watch as many FCS playoff games as possible.

I don’t disagree that g5 splitting and creating their own championship would be a great idea for the g5 teams, but I doubt it creates much more interest.

Is there any difference between a hypothetical Fresno st/ucf national title game and a North Dakota st/s Dakota st game?

On a national level, ucf gets more attention lobbying for the playoff and beating auburn in a ny6 game.

I would have very little interest in the G5 if they split off, but I have very little interest in them now.

I like the idea of a split, but I think the P5 should be reorganized before that happens where all of the P5 conferences become equal in size and number of conference games and Notre Dame is forced to join one of them (which means Rutgers, Baylor, TCU, Wake Forest, or Purdue will be demoted. My money is on Rutgers).

I would argue we either need 4 16 team super conferences (64 teams), 8 8 team conferences (64 teams), or 6 12 team conferences (72 teams). Currently, there are 64 teams in the P5. Big 10, ACC, and SEC each have 14 teams while the Pac 12 has 12 and the Big 12 has 10 teams. I want balance. Also, I would demand that if we move to the 6 conference model, that BYU and all 3 service academies have to be included in the big boy conference.

Yes, and i bet they would try, and even possibly sue to allow kids from p5 conferences, 2 become eligible immediately if they transfer, ala div1a playoff.

And many of the g-5 are fun games to watch, from 11am till 11pm.

I would agree to watch their games if it meant getting p5 vs p5 only schedules

I would be interested because it's still college football.

I think that if the G5 split, they would need some sort of a merger with the FCS to really galvanize interest. There are plenty of FCS schools that could make the jump to G5. North Dakota St is a quality program. I'd love to see Boise St vs North Dakota St or a UCF @ Montana in WaGrizz Stadium. That would be epic!!!

I'm sure majority of Missouri Valley football teams would make that jump. One of top conferences in fcs, year in year out. A meat grinder

Yeah, they'd do great relegating themselves like that. Just look how much interest there is in FCS ball!!! ESPN3 games all day baby!!!

If I were a fan of UCF or whoever, I'd much rather play in a major bowl against a team like LSU than in the B tier national championship against Boise.

Just spit balling here, might be a terrible idea but if you want to generate some interest in G5 what about this idea. If the CFP went to 8 and guaranteed a G5 spot, then cut the G5 schedule down to 11 games with no conference championship games. Separate poll for G5 teams and the Top 4 do their own playoff starting the last week of the P5 regular season. G5 "Championship Game" the weekend of the P5 Conference Championship Games and the winner of the G5 championship gets the G5 autobid into the CFP.

Yea but schools like UCF and Boise are exceptions. On the other hand, there far more schools in the MAC, SUNBELT and CUSA who would love this. 98% of those schools have 0% chance to make the current playoffs....or bowl games for that matter.

Maybe - but the G5 teams make their bones by beating P5 teams. See Boise, UCF, etc. In some cases like Utah and TCU they even move up into P5 conferences. A split would reduce the opportunity to build their brand.

If the playoffs end up expanding to 8 it would make more sense to have the G4 champions do play-in games and the P6 (including the AAC) getting the first 6 spots. Or have the five P5 champs and the best G5 champ get byes and the last four teams pair off for the play in games.

It would be great for them. The military academies could have a chance again!
