Laimbeer (and others) would have put his arse on the court every time he drove the lane

Sounds like a foul. U think fouling someone is good defense?

That pistons team has completely ruined NBA discourse lmao.

Hey guys this one team was full of thugs and and the refs let them hammer people relentlessly for a couple years. So they were a fair representation of the average nba team for 15-20 years.

And for the defense was better in the 80s argument, the stats dont back it up.

1989 teams made 42.5 shots on 89 attempts per game

2022 teams made 40.6 shots on 88 attempts per game.

That is despite

Your entire argument is invalid due to volume of long range shots per game. 2022 the average number of 3s taken a game was 34. In 1989, it was 6. The longer the shoot the less percent it goes in. The NBA of old was a paint game which translates into better fg %.

2022-23
47.4% total fgs - 35% from 3 - 55% from 2.

1989-1990
45.1% total fgs - 33% from 3 - 48% from 2.

To me this shows no interior defense is being played in todays NBA. Are are todays players much better shooters? The 3 point % doesnt correlate your narrative. 2% isnt much a difference. It just wasnt emphasized as it is now.

LeBrons longevity is incredible. Akin to Tom Brady's. But there are a few big reasons why both have had such long careers, and only 1 is their own doing. Both take extreme care of their bodies, but both have benefitted greatly from advanced science for their bodies and both games are very much less physical from previous decades.

Lebron started in the NBA at 18 and played 20 years. MJ started at 23 and missed 2 years with the baseball BS.

it often wasn't called a foul back then.
which affected the way the game was played.

Hell Robert Parish literally punched Laimbeer in the playoffs, knocking him on his arse. No foul. No ejection.

You don't com barreling into the lane like Lebron does now knowing that Rodman, Oakley, Barkley, or a role playing goon like Rick Mahorn etc. are there waiting to deliver a thump.

Lebron is a better shooter, rebounder, and floor general than MJ.

Lebron shots at a higher percentage from 2 and from 3. Has more points, rebounds, and assists.

Only time MJ is better at shooting than Lebron is at the FT line when nobody is guarding him.

Can we stop with the GOAT conversation

I for one think there are five or six goats.

Lebron
MJ
Magic
Kareem
Bird
Russell

Possibly Curry in a few years.

Basketball has changed so many times a single goat is a disservice to the game.

So explain to me how they were allowed to punch people on defense and not get called for fouling, yet gave up just as many field goals per game?

You would think if you were allowed to lay people out you would prevent them from making as many shots as they do these days when you cant blow on someone without it being a foul.

We saw the writing on the wall that MJ declined at 34. It was his lowest-priced eFG % ever.

Lebron at 38 is still able to maintain a higher ppg at a much higher efficiency

Even taking away 3 pters (MJ was 24% from 3 at 34. Down from 43% 2 years earlier at a higher volume) Lebron is still much more efficient at scoring

hgh in heavy doses

That's fine if we want to go with the PED narrative but MJ was treating his body like shite (even though he had a great trainer). Drank and smoked all the time. All the HGH in the world isn't going to help when you're putting that shite into your body.

because at that time the game was dominated by Bigs shooting from 2 feet away.

This is exactly what I was saying in my last post

Athletes are bigger, stronger, and faster than they’ve ever been. Players in 90s in the watered down expansion league were not as good as skilled as they are now also…

Responses to us will be:

“But muh 90s defense” -11 “but I want the player who I grew up watching to be the best”

Fricking child mentality by some of these posters… Players are better now and they can’t get over it

Yeah its a dead giveaway when boomers say shite like this. Imagine prime Heat era Lebron in that era

It was a magical night. These crazy numbers are going to just keep coming. Lebron is filling stat sheets that no one will ever touch. No one has the ability to dominate the game of basketball in all these different areas. He's going to set the bar so high in the next few years that others might as well be looking at Cal Rikin's consecutive games played record.

His efficiency and athleticism are still off the chart and he's still motivated to be the best of the best. To be the King of points during the Playoffs and now all-time regular season is just the kind of stuff that is going to put LeBron in the stratosphere of the GOAT conversation. His assists and rebounds separate him from every pretender that has come before him. I don't think the type of player it would take to surpass his historic numbers exists in today's ball. Just too busy with their load management concerns.

LeBron James is the greatest all-around player who ever laced them up. A true Tree Shredding Machine.
