Then Texas should have a bunch of Stanley cups too. In baseball the Dodgers and Yankees who are in high tax states are dominating right now. Like any professional sport, you have to have a combination of things including an owner willing to spend and a great GM and scouts who know who to spend money on.

Holy shite what a stupid comment

No income tax in Florida means those teams have an effectively higher salary cap. Like 10% higher than some other teams, maybe even more with canadians who get raped by taxes

If it’s anything like other sports, you only have that tax break on home games. You get paid in the city if the game in the nfl

True. Florida got a new owner about 10 years ago, and have steadily improved since then.

Ownership matters in sports. To my knowledge, the Canadian teams are all owned by conglomerates/corporations as opposed to a single/central point of contact. This has more to do with success than most anything.

Tampa Bay, Florida, and Vegas all have excellent owners. The Maple Leafs, at one point, were largely owned by the Ontario Teachers Pension, if I'm not mistaken.

Only the leafs and Jets are I believe.

Canadians are owned by Jeff Molson which makes it a bit confusing

Everyone else is similar owner to American teams

Taxes and weather. It’s hard for Canadian teams to attract the top free agents.

This can’t be argued in hockey. The best players are “only” making $12 million a year. Your roster is built on $2-5 million players, and the no state tax thing at that level of income is meaningful.

When you’re making $60 million a year plus your Nike contract you give a lot less shits about taxes

Still matters in Canada. That’s why the Raptors haven’t ever signed a major superstar in free agency. It ain’t just because it gets cold in the winter time.

I really don't think it has anything to do with the state...

Talent wise.

No sales tax in Florida makes it easier to sign and retain free agents .

Assuming you mean state income tax, then explain why, since a Canadian team last won the Stanley Cup in 1993, the year before the Florida Panthers entered the league and Tampa Bay winning the Cup in 2020 - these teams attracted free agents and won a Stanley Cup in states with high state income taxes.

1994 NY Rangers (10.9%)
1995 NJ Devils (10.75%)
1996 Colorado Avalanche (4.4%)
1997 Detroit Red Wings (4.25%)
1998 Detroit Red Wings (4.25%)
2000 NJ Devils (10.75%)
2001 Colorado Avalanche (4.4%)
2002 Detroit Red Wings (4.25%)
2003 NJ Devils (10.75%)
2006 Carolina Hurricanes (4.25%)
2007 Anaheim Ducks (13.3%)
2008 Detroit Red Wings (4.25%)
2009 Pittsburgh Penguins (3.07%)
2010 Chicago Blackhawks (4.95%)
2011 Boston Bruins (9%)
2012 Los Angeles Kings (13.3%)
2013 Chicago Blackhawks (4.95%)
2014 Los Angeles Kings (13.3%)
2015 Chicago Blackhawks (4.95%)
2016 Pittsburgh Penguins (3.07%)
2017 Pittsburgh Penguins (3.07%)
2018 Washington Capitals (10.75%)
2019 St. Louis Blues (4.7%)

You are also discounting that players on Tampa Bay and Florida teams (as well as Dallas, Vegas, Seattle and Nashville) pay state or provincial income taxes when they travel to, from, practice or play in a jurisdiction that imposes an income tax. Canadian players pay less or no income taxes when playing in the US. Many players also claim residence in the US to avoid Canadian income taxes - including the highest paid player in the league Auston Matthews who has played 9 seasons for Toronto.

An American team has won the CFL Grey Cup since a Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup.

In 1999, if state income tax was so important you'd think they would have a couple more championships.

While Florida/Tampa Bay have dominated the last 5 or 6 years it was teams in states w/ income tax that dominated the previous 20 years. Why did it take Florida teams 29 and 30 years to win a Stanley Cup if they had such an advantage signing players?
