The best player of his era that didn't get tarnished by using PED's.

In the era of steroids, he was still better than almost everyone that was juicing.

Great player with Seattle. Should have never left as he was injury prone in Cincinnati. Also, he has the best baseball video game named after him.

Dude, you have some revisionist history on how big Jordan was in the 90s.

Sport was huge and mostly watched JUST because of Air Jordan...

Think of another sport that people and casual general public folk knew and occasionally watched because of one guy....then get back to me. Jordan made the NBA International... A rare figure above the sport, so far above his peers.

Now if Griffey had played for the Yankees, who knows?

He was the face of the MLB in the mid to late 90s. His baseball cards were definitely the most sought after, and young baws all over Mississippi had Mariners hats.

The dude hit the warehouse in Baltimore. No one did before or after.

The swing + walk out the box after he hit a bomb will forever be imprinted in my brain.

He was an all time great.

I'm amazed how many people are downplaying his career. People talk about Trout if he could stay healthy would be better than Mantle. Heck even with injuries (which Mantle had too) Griffey was arguably better then Mantle.

If you're putting together an all time MLB outfield to me your selecting between Aaron, Mays, Bonds, Griffey, Mantle, and Williams. I actually would make Williams or Ruth my DH.

He was also arguably the greatest defensive outfielder of all-time.

He wasn't remotely close to being the best defensive outfielder of all time (that's either Willie Mays or Andruw Jones depending on your preference). He was an excellent fielder though until injuries caught up to him, and for a 5-6 year stretch during the mid 90s he was truly elite. He was straight up bad defensively during his Cincy years. If you wanted to argue best combination of offense and defense during his peak I could see it, but he's not best of all time quality defensively.

The only other player in his league in that generation is Barry Bonds

Barry Bonds, Frank Thomas, and Griffey Jr were all neck and neck offensively in terms of best hitters of the 90s. Barry obviously used PEDs out the arse and dominated the 2000s too, whereas Frank didn't use PEDs and fell off due to injuries, and Griffey JR had injuries and a non-PED type aging curve as well.

Anyone claiming Griffey JR was nepotism is dumb, dude was legit right behind Jordan in popularity in the 90s and a complete stud. And as mentioned one of the sweetest swings of all time.

Yes.

What MLB Players Really Said About Ken Griffey Jr.
This says it all: "Tony Gwynn once described Junior's swing as pure art . . . "

He could do everything so well. A smooth bat, a lockdown CF with a strong arm who could run if he had to.

He was a rare talent. Just wish he could have avoided the injury bug. Easy Top 5 all-time if he doesn't, probably better.

he was the man in the 90s. right up there with Jordan, Tyson, Gretsky, Sampras in terms of the coverage and praise.

If they would have moved him from center to first base or even right field, I think he makes it to 700…. Or if he stays in Seattle and gets the DH treatment he easily makes it to 700.
I like that it happened just the way it did. He did it all for long enough that we know what peak Griffey looked like and got to enjoy it for a long time. And some of his totals can be anything we want them to be

Plus being one of the GOAT outfielders of all time is really cool.

no... not even close...

he was every well known, mainly b/c of his swing style, which was amazing... but he was a hell of a ball player, but i think injuries were the start of his downfall and he never really could come back from that to his former glory

that's an opinion, sure

he won 10 straight golf gloves. In 2007, Rawlings made an all-time golf glove team. Griffey, Mays, And Clemente were their outfielders. To laugh at the notion he is "arguably" the best defensive outfielder of all time or to say that he isn't remotely close is fricking stupid.

How can you be sure neither one used? Are you just taking their word or basing it off asthetics?
