Last year, when they cancelled for Covid, was the first time I've missed an Indy bowl in about 17 years. Chose not to go this year either, and to watch LSU/Tech basketball instead. This bowl is cursed with terrible weather year in and year out, and I used to be willing to sit through it for good/decent matchups. I've seen Nebraska, Oklahoma, OK State, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Missouri, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Duke, LaTech, Air Force, Texas A&M, Arizona, Ohio, Miami...and those are just the ones I remember off the top of my head. Those are some big time teams that bring big fan bases and make for a fun atmosphere.
Now I'm afraid that my coming to the Indy Bowl year in and year out is coming to a close. A basically permanent tie in for BYU, and bringing in some random G5 team to face them every year? No thanks...I'd rather not deal with Shreveport for that. I'd rather go hunting or something at this point than watch subpar teams that I don't care about.
Heck the most fun game I've ever watched in that stadium wasn't even for an Indy Bowl...it was the frickin exhibition game between LaTech Texas A&M right when they joined the SEC. Got to see Johnny Manziel go crazy before anybody knew who the hell he was, and LaTech came back and dang near won the thing. That was a fun game!

When was it ever good?
It’s been the bottom of the barrel for decades.

Yes, it’s because it’s Shreveport
When the message boards make jokes about it, you can’t fault the SEC for listening to their fans and dropping the bowl

Brad Smith ran all over the cocks in 05 I believe. Never forget!

It’s the shittiest weather of any bowl.

Most years, The Battle on the Border is a better option to see over the actual bowl game in the Indy Bowl Stadium.
In just the 2016 and 2017 games, I saw these players:
2017 class FSU WDE Joshua Kaindoh, Bama LB Dylan Moses, Mich. OL Cesar Ruiz, Ohio St. safety Isaiah Pryor, LSU safety Grant Delpit, A&M WR Jhamon Ausbon, Notre Dame OT Robert Hainsey, Bama DL Phidarian Mathis, Mich. LB Jordan Anthony, A&M QB Kellen Mond, who were all in the top 110 players on 247Sports, plus 15 more P5 players and 12 G5 players.
2018 class LSU WR Terrace Marshall Jr. (was injured early), and 12 more P5 players. TCU QB Justin Rogers was injured a week or two before the game.
2019 class Mich. Safety Daxton Hill, Auburn LB Owen Pappoe, Tenn. OT Wanya Morris, A&M safety Brian Williams, Mich. OT Trente Jones, AL WDE Kevin Harris, and a dozen more current P5 players.
Saw some of them their junior and senior year

Man, there’s no need for shat like this. The weather sucked but Did you actually watch the…game? Ranked BYU vs good UAB team. Great game. Happy for UAB.

The Independence Bowl has always been low tier. I'm not sure why this board thinks otherwise.
Yea, but a low-tier bowl that is drawing teams from the SEC or Big 12 or whatever is better than plucking Sun Belt and AAC squads.
Seeing a 6-win Auburn and Oklahoma State battle it out will draw a better crowd for sure.

A potentially better crowd is not the point though.
You guys can't be all "Oh the bowls now are bullshite b/c everyone gets in! Why can't it be a reward for good teams like it used to be? All these bowls w/6-6 and 7-5 teams are awful games!" But then turn around and go "Man oh man the Independence Bowl used to be great and now it's awful!" when those "great" games you are pining for were 6-5 and 7-4 teams that you all constantly claim don't deserve bowls.
On top of that the matchup this year was the highest ranked team to ever make it to the Indy in #12 10-2 BYU vs an ok-ish 8-4 UAB. In fact, BYU was just the 8th ranked team to ever even play in the Indy and the first in 24 years.
That makes no sense to call this game out as bad when y'all are pimping games like a 6-5 Bama vs a 7-4 Iowa St as good matchups when those are the very types of games this board trashes as bowls that shouldn't happen. Never mind that the main reason the attendance was bad was b/c of awful awful weather.

So how is a bowl game with 5 ranked teams ever supposed to be good?
This bowl isn’t great but it has a name tie in with BYU and the big issue is placements. The bowl committee really doesn’t get to choose BYU opponent Disney does, and let’s be honest they don’t care.

That's what I don't get. Me personally, well of course I watch them all no matter the record b/c I love football. However, this board trashes bowl games that has teams w/poor records. Welp... The Independence Bowl has essentially always been that minus a few brief years early on when it was getting the Southland champ as one of it's tie ins.

Used to be quite a good bowl. It’s fallen down the pecking order, even to the point Louisiana Tech turned them down one year.

It used to be great. Big 12 vs SEC on New Year’s Eve:
LSU vs Notre Dame
LSU vs Michigan State
A&M vs Mississippi State Snow Bowl
Ole Miss vs Nebraska
Ole Miss vs Oklahoma
Auburn vs Army

Doc it is misremembering and using names of old not quality of teams
I love bowls I love the games and absolutely believe they are useful. My issue is Disney’s interference. I think that is what drives the “hate”.
I feel that the bowls have been pooped on by elitist in CFP not using them in correct way. They were never meant to mean anything. Shifting priorities in the society and let’s face it some of the television coverage changes in the game have the games not as special.
Showing every game every week really dilutes the product. The NFL does it right in trying to segregate their viewership of regional teams.

Those Ole Miss games were a joke
NU had its worst team in a generation. The OU team was .500. Notre Dame LSU was a committee game and lucked into that matchup. LSU MSU was 2 6-4-1 teams.

Except for maybe Auburn/Army (which had one of the 8 ranked teams to make this game in Army) these are all games this board would now trash as terrible and proof that there are too many bowls.
LSU 6-4-1 vs Michigan St 6-4-1
Miss St 7-4 vs TAMU 7-4
OM 6-6 vs NU 7-6
OM 7-4 vs OU 7-4
#24 Army 10-1 vs Auburn 8-4
however even this one would have had this board complaining b/c oh no Army has a bullshite schedule. There is no positive for Auburn b/c they are expected to win!
The meltdown this board would have if an SEC team was playing a team that had wins against 2 1AA teams in Yale and Lafayette plus another that was in it's first year in 1A in North Texas would be massive.
