HOF level players that slipped through the cracks in big time college recruiting?

I'm mostly thinking football in the OP, but you can apply it to any sport if you want.
John Randle: Came out of Mumford/Hearne, TX.. I'm not sure if he was recruited by UT, TAMU or TTU etc. Maybe it was a grades thing? Maybe he flourished late?.. either way, he ended up at Trinity Valley Community College (86-87) and then transferred to Texas A&I
Special NFL player that played in the smaller arenas during his formative years

I don't know about their recruiting, but two of the greatest of all time (Jerry Rice & Walter Payton) went to Mississippi HBCU's. One of the greatest QB's and the only HOF punter went to Southern Miss. Crazy in a state with 2 SEC schools.

James Harrison walked on to Kent State, went undrafted, and should eventually be in the Pro Football HOF as a Steeler.
He did however have major offers at one point but lost them due to issues

This thread essentially assumes players are born as great players and that there is no such thing as development, coaching, training. That they are the same as the best version of themselves at all stages and never get better as they grow.
As for Randle he was also an UDFA, because he was undersized. He was listed at 6’1” 244. He became great in the pros through a combination of hard work by him and professional coaching and training

Demarcus Ware terrorized LSU while he was at Troy for an entire miserable game.

There are several older NFL Hall of Famers that went to HBCUs and it’s not because the big schools “missed” on recruiting. Payton was in HS in the late 60s, just a few years after the CRA passed and around the time most SEC schools signed their first black players. He was a top 5 draft pick, probably an SEC player if he was born a decade later.
Recruiting before really the 90s was no where near as sophisticated. Film was difficult and limited. And to watch it you needed a projector and a screen. Stopping to rewind was more difficult. They also didn’t have the camps and showcases like now.
Rice who was also a first round pick and a guy multiple teams were trying to move up to take. He did struggle as a rookie with drops. Would he have become the GOAT WR if he was not drafted by SF? We will never know but playing in Bill Walsh’s offense with 2 HOF QBs certainly helped along with his legendary work outs and work ethic

Steve Nash at Santa Clara U.
According to lore, he only got that scholarship because a different player pulled out of signing with that school. That player was Maherbashazza Ali (spelling likely butchered), the Best Actor winner.

Brett Favre went to USM to play safety
Walter Payton’s only offer was to Kansas State but he declined because he wanted to be closer to home.
