Wait, so you want schedules to become… let me get this straight… WEAKER?

When the committee shows they don’t reward teams for playing harder schedules why not? Coaches and program’s goal is to get into the playoffs. Not play entertaining games against top 25 OOC opponents once a year in September.

It becomes especially more important when they take spots away from better teams for charity cases like Tulane and JMU

Why would Texas play someone like Ohio State anymore in September and risk a loss thus they could only lose once in conference? If they lost a second conference game they’re out. This would be especially true in the SEC if you happen to then have two or three top 15 teams on the schedule. It would be less prone to happen in the Big 10 since they are much more top heavy. It would be less common but it could happen in the SEC. See Texas A&M last year.

Pretty much nonexistent threat of having to play 2-3 top 15 teams in conference in the ACC or Big 12 as it stands.

ND rolled back their schedule for this exact reason. And then they got this asinine top 12 rule implemented.

Greg Sankey has really blown it down the stretch. He forced every team in the conference, which is already stacked knee deep with elite programs, to play nine conference games plus an additional P4 OOC game. If the CFP doesn't get expanded beyond 12 teams, he's essentially gotten played by the Big Ten.

Because college football is entertainment, and playing Clemson is a lot more entertaining than Southeastern to anyone who actually watches sports rather than simply uses it as a projection for their identity and unfulfilled dreams of success. The fan who wants what is best for their team at all costs wants to go undefeated by any means necessary, even if that means competing against scrubs and blowing them away. They don’t exist to be entertained by the action on the field, only to have their self worth validated by the success of their favorite team.

The fan who wants to be entertained wants their team to win against the best of the best because that’s actually fun to watch. Sure, winning is better than losing, but a close game is a lot more fun than a blowout.

KB, that's all true and a great reminder of what's really important. I personally would rather watch good teams to at it, I mean, who likes to watch blowouts? But if you are the AD then you want your team in the Playoffs, so it helps in the regular season to play as many DIII teams as possible instead of playing Clemson. Your real fanatics DO enjoy watching their team blow out some school like North Texas or Temple.

I'm just saying that with the way the game is today, it makes more sense for LSU to play Temple or North Texas instead of Clemson.

Temple at LSU for football! That's never happened before, KB! That would be EXCITING.

would rather watch my team lose a close game on the road to a top 25 OOC opponent than watch my team blow out an FCS team by 50 at home. The FCS rent-a-win games are almost unwatchably boring. I understand that this is an unpopular opinion and actively discouraged by the current playoff system.

Well you’re an absolute fricking retard then

Well Curt Cignetti is talking as much shite as he can to everyone he can while playing the absolute worst schedule a power 5 team could possibly play. So…

What’s asinine about it? If they don’t want ND in the playoffs they could just put them #13. It’s a 12 team playoff. I think it’s reasonable to give them a way in because they can’t get a conference’s automatic bid. What other team that finishes in the top 12 won’t get in?

If the rule was ND is guaranteed in if they’re top 20 you’d have a point

It’s almost like if you play one and win it will help you more than playing some rent a win like LA Tech.

And the conference needs the money. No one watches the rent a win games and no one spends money to go to them

That game has to matter too. If they win it they can lose twice in conference and have it in their back pocket if tOSU performs and they lose three times

LSU should take note - why are you playing Clemson as your season opener when you could be playing Southeastern Louisiana University or Hofstra as your season opener?

I’m just happy we have a week 1 game finally at home, frick the neutral site openers. The last time we played week 1 at home was 2020

Right.

How about we just win the games?

For pure entertainment value, Clemson at LSU in Baton Rouge during the regular season is way more entertaining than Clemson vs LSU in some corporate neutral site playoff game played hundreds of miles away from either campus.

A team that will get pushed out by someone like Tulane or JMU becuase of how the rules are set up. Like for instance BYU just last season.

it’s not that it’s unpopular, you just explained it in your second sentence. it doesn’t matter what we want. if the point of the sport is for the 30-40 schools in the country who have the ability is to win a title, our opinions on what we’d rather watch are fricking irrelevant. I hope we schedule McNeese, Southeastern, and Grambling every year until the committee recognizes the damage they’re doing to the sport

it’s not our responsibility to stop them from killing themselves

It’s a fricking disgrace and a joke, but they’ve got it figured out. Why play anyone worth a damn?

True. This is the new formula.

The old formula was for the media to have half the SEC ranked in the preseason top 15 in order to artificially inflate the SOS for every team in the SEC.

Sure, South Carolina ended the season 4-8, but their early #6 ranking sure looks like a quality win for some opposing teams at the end of the season. Let’s rank SC in the preseason top 10 next season and do it all again.

Meanwhile, I turn on college game day and see everyone wax poetic about the superiority of the SEC only for the camera to pan over to some portly Bubba in an Arkansas PFG fishing shirt and stupid visor chanting, “SEC! SEC! SEC!”

I’m glad those days are over.

There’s zero reason to make any big out of conference games in a 12 team playoff. None. Indiana and a few other programs have figured this out. When the playoff inevitably expands to 16 or 24 there will be even less of an incentive to play tough out of conference games.

Correct. Just about any B1G or SEC team that finishes 11-1 or 10-2 is a playoff lock. Why risk it?

I thought the expanded playoff would lead to more big OOC matchups as teams wouldn't be so scared to stub their toe in one. But, I get it, it just adds another loss and puts you in jeopardy of missing the playoffs if you drop a couple of conference games.

Texas/OSU was weird last year, both coaches seemed to be just playing for a close loss.

Famous saying, show me the incentives and I'll show you the outcome. Committee has shown that they punish losses far more than they reward tough schedules.

It makes me sad to know that the experience of watching games play out over CC weekend to see if the chips fall out that allow that BCS score to propel you to #1 will never be experienced by my kids. To see every game in October be must watch, must win. To sit on the edge of your seat playing out endless scenarios.

The experience of college football will be like going to Blockbuster to our kids. Something we talk about with nostalgia and reverence that they’ll never fully understand or experience.
