Has Orgeron permanently closed the option for interims to get the full job?

Seems that one of the biggest "selling points" for O by his fans, justifying their desire for him in 2016 was that the USC players wanted him as HC after his interim stint there, and the LSU players wanted him as HC after his interim stint.

Well, that window appears to be closed and the argument seems 100x more absurd than in 2016. Is that argument permanently dead, however? If not, how long will it take for any interim to not be compared to O? 25 years?

Hotshot coordinator at a declining program could definitely still make the move. The door is probably closed for worst coaches in Ole Miss history, though.

I'm ready to move on from CEO too but let's not act like it was a complete failure. The guy did win a national championship. His fall from grace shouldn't impact other programs' decisions on going with a successful interim.

With each passing day it becomes more clear he was just along for the ride andhas no fricking clue what it took to achieve that. It's frankly amazing it happened the way it did.

Hell, do y’all remember Bill Stewart getting the gig at WVU for his stint as interim when Rich Rod left for Michigan?

It almost always fails.

Continuity is meaningless if the head coach is mediocre. It works in the extreme short term, but is disastrous in the long term.

Dabo was definitely an interim. He took over after Bowden resigned midseason.

The argument FOR Orgeron in 2016 was that the LSU program wasn't broken...at all. It just needed to get rid of the stubborn arse at the top who REFUSED to make the few necessary changes to get LSU to a championship program once more. Even if Les isn't fired LSU is likely a 9 win team in 2016. The defense was good. The recruiting was good. The program did not need an overall. It needed to move the road block out of the way.

O could sell the AD on that, along with keeping the recruiting at a high level. Essentially, "I'm going to keep all of what is good about the program in place and change the few things the other guy refused to change." To be fair, he eventually did that. However, once many of good holdovers from the prior regime left (coaches and players) Ed had to build HIS program...something he can't do.

If another situation like that comes about then I could see another interim getting a permanent gig. But in most cases the reason a HC is fired mid-season (outside of scandal) is because the program is in the shitter and needs to be overhauled completely.

Nah, Dabo was named the interim mid-season in 2008

What should matter here is how the HC search is going. No one should be in an Alleva like situation where there are only two guys you’ve most notably targeted and you’ve been priced out of one and “did not want to be in a bidding war” with the other, just to end saying that the interim guy “is the one you wanted for the job all along.”

O was extremely flawed at the time, and honestly never grew out of the flaws. I don't think this really "closes" interims because coaches will always get fired midseason, and non-bluebloods might use that tag to test out talented young OC/DC's as HCs in that way.

I really don’t think so. In the right situation a good coordinator could get the job after the interim role.

If Bama had beaten Oklahoma State in that bowl game they should have given Joe Kines the gig. But alas, couldn't stop that inside trap.

As much credit as he is given for it by people that were there, I don’t think this is true.

I’m surprised they Mike Archer didn’t close that option at LSU, TBH.

Arnsbarger was great and Archer was able to take his talent and win… then declined when he couldn’t put talent out there to compete. Then Curley fricking Hellman happened.
