I just read that! Amazing

So, what’s your point.

I have seen Secretariat sportscentury and it is one of favorites. I wasn't alive but it had to be a spectacle to watch these events live back then...
I was born and raised in KY and the thoroughbred industry is a point of pride for Kentuckians . As I said above I was 11 yrs old and never had a TC winner in my time so all the previous ones were dead legends. So when Secretariat won it was a BFD in all the sports world. However it was not until many yrs later that everyone realized how dominate he was.

Secretariat raced in fields of 13, 6, and 5 in his TC races. AP’s were 18, 8, and 8.
The number of horses in the race is irrelevant for the most part since Secretariat's times in all three races have never been bested...

Big Red was a once in a lifetime animal. I knew my boy Gambit was a descendant of American Pharaoh, but didn’t realize, like everyone else, he went back to Big Red.

And there’s the difference. There was no breeders cup back in 73 I don’t believe.

Is that good? I mean at some point is there inbreeding that would be destructive to the breed?

American Pharaoh won the Triple Crown and the Breeders Cup Classic. Secretariat raced in fields of 13, 6, and 5 in his TC races. AP’s were 18, 8, and 8. Secretariat won 16/21 starts. AP won 9/11.
My boy Gambit was a descendant of both of these legends.

Damn horse was juicing… test back in the day wasn’t sophisticated enough to catch it

Fewer horses to block your path. Less chance of another horse having a career day and beating you.
Prove Out beat Secretariat by 4.5 lengths at tBelmont a few months after he looked invincible on the same track and distance.

That doesn’t really answer the question

No one remembers that Sham beat Secretariet earlier in the year.
When great just wasn't good enough.
