Preliminary groundwork already is underway for the American, Conference-USA, Mid-American, Mountain West and SunBelt conferences to have an official Group of Five Top 25 national poll, with voting open only to head coaches in those leagues. Independent programs UConn and UMass also will be included in the rankings, pushing the number of teams involved to be approximately 64.

Sources tell FootballScoop that the burgeoning movement already has a title sponsor for the rankings.
Organizers of the prospective poll believe that a proprietary ranking for the G-5 leagues, with every head coach receiving a vote, could spark greater interest in potential broadcasting deals and programmining.
"If the No. 2 team in the Group of Five is playing at the No. 6 Group of Five team, that's going to attract more viewers," as it was told to FootballScoop.

How many Go5 teams are there to begin with? 60?

Good...The G5 is in playoff purgatory. I would even suggest the G5 seek out a few of the premier FCS conferences like the MVC, Big Sky, Colonial and expand to the G8 and let them have their own playoff. The FCS has 13 conferences and the champ usually comes from one of those 3 premier conferences. Let the FCS go to 10 conferences and have more parity.

Not a bad idea at all in theory.
With that said, this could also be a signal of the inevitable break with the P4, which WILL be the final straw in the demise of college football as we know it.

Honestly they could do their own "NIT" type playoff. use it to determine seeding, and if a G5 team takes a playoff spot then seeds move up

G5 needs its own playoff system where each game is played on campus until a championship game.

That is because they know it is inevitable the power conferences will break from the NCAA and form their own league. One where teams in the G5 conferences aren't invited.
That means those schools are going to be left in purgatory and they really don't want to move "down" to the FCS. They essentially trying to lay the groundwork for becoming the the new FCS, with 24 team playoff, when the power conferences eventually split.
Actually pretty good forethought by the G5 schools. They aren't stopping the inevitable split. So they may as well start positioning themselves for it

It's only a matter of time before they break away for good
When Power 5 is lining up to take your best players anyway, change will be good for everyone once the train stops rolling

Hopefully the new organization is for football only.
I'd like to go back to the old conferences and the field of 64 for hoops.
Everything else should be compact regional conferences.

Yep. This is merely the first step to a split in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The power conferences are going to go their separate ways and so will the G5. It's now a matter of when and not if.

It will be the end of college football as we know it. But that may not be ALL bad.
Games between power conf. program and G5 school are unnecessary and largely unentertaining. There nothing more exciting to see an LSU v Georgia St. matchup on the second to last week of the regular season.

Now, replace those with multiple games such as Michigan v Florida St, Texas v. Clemson, Georgia v Ohio St, LSU v Penn St, etc, etc, as opposed to those teams playing multiple games vs. the likes of ULM, Coastal Carolina, Western Kentucky, Akron, Central Michigan, Grambling, etc, etc,
As a season ticket holder I have ZERO desire to waste an entire Saturday to attend a game between LSU and UAB, or Southern, or New Mexico. In fact, I generally don't. But I have to pay for that ticket anyway. Now, if instead of those teams I can see games vs. other power conf. opponents I'm probably more willing to spend more money because I feel I'm getting more value for my dollar. That's going to be the same for those folks watching on TV, which will make the TV contracts more valuable.
People like tradition. I get it. And we are all hesitant to embrace change of something we love. But I think by the end of this season many will see the new 12 playoff is great and will soon find it absurd that we used to rest on pins and needles hoping to see our 8-4 team play another 8-4 in an irrelevant bowl game in Florida, with an ever-changing name, a month after the end of the season.
The less Alabama v. ULM games there are, the better for college football.

It will be interesting to see if/how they try to navigate this because unlike other playoffs it's not the later rounds that make the NCAA Basketball tournament wildly popular. It's the opening rounds with the potential for compelling David v Goliath type games. You want to lose James Madison for football. But you also want to make sure they are in the NCAA Tournament to preserve the chance to watch JMU upset Wisconsin

ULM-Bama was great.

Was just gonna say that, ULM vs Bama was probably the worst example of a cupcake game to use considering ULM won

I grew up in a different time in college football.
The 1982 LSU-Alabama game still gets talked about today. As does the 1982 LSU Florida State game, where it rained Oranges because “we were going to some irrelevant bowl” in Florida if we won. (And I’m sure that for a lot of Tulane fans, the 1982 LSU-Tulane game still matters too…damn Reginelli)
The “National Championship” in those days really was an afterthought…no doubt it meant something, but it wasn’t the be all to end all. And the game way better for it.

It sounds like college football to you is more about “entertainment”. Following your logic, why limit your game attendance to a single
team? Skip LSU-Wake Forest to see Oklahoma-Texas? As you mention, it’s even easier to do with TV.
As I get older, I’m starting to embrace the grumpy old man “get off my lawn” thing a little bit more. Your opinion is yours, and it’s all well and good if it works for you.
But I just think college football is definitely headed in the wrong direction. Obviously we have seen the problems with people leaving at halftime - not just against the Georgia States of the world but against SEC competition.
As you point out, these decisions are all truly about money. And there not about getting the money from the true alumni and fans of schools, but about some guy living up in Queens who will watch LSU-NC State cause he has “heard of them” and has $100 in prop bets on fandool that he hopes come thru so he can celebrate with Dr Pepper and a new Nissan, insured by All State.

Apparently there is discussion among the G5 for a G5 only playoff with the winner getting the G5 CFP spot.

If they make their own playoff, they shouldn’t be eligible for the big CFP

Why? Why does it matter to you how the G5 picks their representative.

The real question is, in the new NIL free agency era, will the smaller schools, lower profile athletes, and more consistent rosters be a better football product than the Power 5 schools. Obviously less heralded recruits and smaller fanbases but just in terms of the product on the field?
Part of the reason why we love college football is the players on the field representing the school and the location that we love. That is being lost with a new roster every 10 months.
