There's a decent made for TV movie about The Goat starring a young Don Cheadle.

sabonis still wasnt that old when he came over to the US. He was good, but not a "wow" all time great
he just looked old as frick and honestly wasnt that mobile. people assume he was some old washed up bum
The same argument you have for Yao could be made for Sabonis- both fricked up their body playing for the national team. Sabonis just had more talent, came to the NBA after 10 years of basketball

except you never know how good he could have been vs NBA talent.
Yao actually played & produced vs NBA guys.
I understand he was a stud in Europe. Im sure those leagues were competitive, but basketball wasn't nearly as global then as it now.
I'd imagine there weren't many talented big men the size of Sabonis playing in those leagues.
These guys overseas are always "legends". You hear about them, but never really see them. You don't know any of the players they are playing against. Guys like Toni Kukoc & Vlade Divac who were "legends" and actually played most of their prime in the NBA. They were good players, even all star caliber at times, but hardly once in a generation players.

I thought Cheadle was good in this and the playground scenes were well done. I liked one scene when Wilt had come over from Philly to play and The Goat, who was a quiet guy, swatted his stuff into the stands. "Welcome to Harlem Mfer"
Eric Lasalle envolved in this movie was the only negative.

so did Sabonis. At well past his prime.
Ming came into the NBA as a 22 year old. Sabonis came in as a 31 year old. Sabonis put up numbers comparable to Ming's at ages older than Ming is NOW.
Kukoc was 25 when he came over. Vlade was 21 when he came over. Bad comparisons to Arvidas.

The rap on McGrady is that basketball came too easy to him. Thus him being out of shape for most of his prime.
I can buy that. he was ridiculous in orlando.

No Brad Daugherty mentions? He was well on his way to be a HOFer before his back gave out. His injury took the Cavs from an above average team to a franchise that was the bottom of the barrel in professional sports.

There is a reason for this. A NICE player but was NEVER gonna be nothing special out of college.

5-time All-Stars are nothing special.

Hank Gathers. I would have loved to be able to see him in an uptempo NBA offense.

And his greatest years were spent not playing in the NBA. He could have been legendary.

Brad was great but that team also had Mark Price, Larry Nance, Ron Harper and more. We had 4 All-stars in that lineup.
Btw, at that time the Saints and the Clippers were considered sports worst franchises.

Just saying, I've also heard this attributed to David Thompson and LeBron.

Benji is the clear choice. Had NBA player and scout respect as a Junior in high school.
