The system back then was pretty strange from what I remember...

In '81-'82, my senior year, I remember Rummel only losing to Jesuit 20-17 and Holy Cross 22-21, and not making the playoffs.

Not like today with playoff seeds... Well, before they screwed it up with the split..

yeah back then it was a numerical rotation based on bi district round - ie the district next to yours by champ and runner ups led to some epic playoff matchups early and not just in NO... had mike toups not gotten hurt shaw would have been in the 81 playoffs.. not hc or jesuit...

He got hurt in the Rummel game.. His career was over after that... it sucked ..

That '82 Rummel team would've gone to State if Paul Wetzel didn't get hurt... They lost to Ruston in the Semis 14-3..

how many first downs did raiders have before he got hurt?

mike brooks was in backfield every play....

toups was an equal recruit to james and hilliard prior to injury.....on a cold saturday night at west jeff...

ya talking about Toups are Wetzel..?

Rummel beat Shaw that year(81) 21-0...

Didn't Toups have an offer from Penn State that year and wound up at La Tech or something..?

Damn thinking back that was 35 years ago.. Good times though...

I think I remember it being a tight game, when Wetzel got hurt in the 1st half it was over.. Final score was only 14 -3

Randy Roth, Jay's younger brother, came in and he was no where close to Wetzel..

I was a Sophomore on the Iota team. We had some really good player-nothing like the other teams mentioned here. But our RB, Jason Miller, won Mr. Louisiana that year. He and our RT, Brent Pousson, went to McNeese on scholarship. Brent did a couple of short stints with the Cleveland Browns practice squad after graduating Fromm McNeese. I played RT, so yea needless to say I didn't see the field in the Finals

Jason was a freaking beast. Best white running back I've ever played against....I always thought he could come play fullback at LSU. I knew Armand Ledet who was on that team as well, and I remember him being fast as all shite. Those Iota teams back in the day were tough as hell. Not sure what happened to them recently.

One of the early 70’s Denham Sprinhns teams lost State to Hahnville. Game was decided on most first downs bc it was a tie and no OT at the time.

How bad would that suck

2008 Capitol with Terrance Broadway, Prentiss Jackson and Frankie Jackson was DAMN good. Lost to Evangel in the Semifinals on a 2pt conversion I believe.

I don't know if one can say that a team that lost in the quarters could be considered one of the "Greatest LHSAA teams not to win state."

But I will posit it, any way.
Archbishop Shaw Eagles, 1977

What is true is South Lafourche beat Fourcade and Shaw in the quarterfinals at South Lafourche, 27-23, then defeated Ouachita, 32-26, in the semifinals while Wilcox and Bonnabel beat Acadiana, 27-7, on the same night. South Lafourche then beat Bonnabel and Wilcox, 21-20, for the state title at South Lafourche when Bayou Lafourche was so full of shrimp boats, speed boats and bass boats that folks could walk across the bayou from boat to boat.

Drove down for that game, I was all of eleven (by a week or two.) I was a Shaw fan, then, and was crushed driving home, and watching the Tarpons run all over "Angelo's Army" in the second half to get the win.

I was at the Championship game that Hahnville beat Ouachita and was actively cheering for Ouachita. Hahnville was much faster and by far the better team.

Ouachita did win the year before.

Welsh 1989 team.

Jonesboro Hodge LB had a late hit and dislocated Welsh’s QB’s hip in championship game. It would have been Welsh’s first championship if he stays healthy.
That LB should have been thrown out of the game.

WM won in 93. Ouachita lost in 94. Neville won in 95. WM won in 96, 97, 98.

Ouachita won in 89, I think. Ruston won in 90. Neville lost in 91 and 92. The old 2-5A dominated 5A football in the 90s.

was on the sidelines..... That was the team that put shaw on the map for sure...... and fourcade did cross the line in one of the 5 best games i have seen.... I was 12 red pop the 3 semifinal teams had QBs that would play pro ball all 4 played in college... hebert SL, Wilcox, Mafhouz, and Bob Lane ...... and of course fourcade...

What high school did you go to?

Seeing Jason and Brent Pousson's talent everyday (and their work ethic) and then seeing they "only" went to McNeese made me realize how incredibly gifted the athletes are that are playing at big D1 schools and beyond.

Watching Jason run over people and then also his ability to just 'glide' and cut when he ran was really, really impressive.

Armand and his young brother Dores were animals as well. Superb athletes and great guys. Dores was my age and incredibly strong. If I remember correctly, he was a starting CB on the 2001 team. We had a few sets of brothers that played on that team.

I left Iota after the 2001 season. They went back to the finals in 2002 and lost to Port Barre. Then after that it was a complete bust.

Iota finally made it back into the playoffs this year and won the first round against Patterson. Then lost in the 2nd round to Kaplan. Being from the area, it's mindblowing to think that Iota is now in 3A with Jennings, Crowley, Iowa, etc.

Brother Martin 1984. Undefeated and ranked 1 or 2 in the state going into the last regular season game.

Lost to Shaw and there was a 3 way tie in district. Brother Martin lost the tie breaker and the other 2 teams went to the playoffs and a top 5 Brother Martin stayed home.
