I don’t know how but some of you are severely underrating Ty Cobb.

Ted Williams was a better hitter than Babe Ruth. If Williams had played in Yankee Stafium with the short porch in RF, had Gehrig hitting behind him and hadn’t lost, basically 5 seasons of his prime to military service, it wouldn’t even be a debate.
I’m a Yankees fan, but I’d go with Williams as well. He missed 3 early prime and nearly 2 late prime seasons due to WWII and Korea, respectively, and played in a park not conducive to left handed power.
Accounting for his averages around those two gaps, he missed out on roughly 150 HRs, 800 hits, and 530 RBI due to military service, which would’ve brought his totals to 660 HRs, 3450 hits and 2370 RBI, the last of which would’ve been more than Aaron’s record.

frick that jingoistic narcissist.
On three occasions, American journeyman players challenged Oh's single-season home run record of 55 and faced Oh-managed teams late in the season. On each occasion, Oh's pitchers refused to throw strikes to them.
In 1985, American Randy Bass, playing for the Hanshin Tigers, came into the last game of the season against the Oh-managed Giants with 54 home runs. Bass was intentionally walked four times on four straight pitches each time.
In 2001, American Karl "Tuffy" Rhodes, playing for the Osaka Kintetsu Buffaloes, hit 55 home runs with several games left. The Buffaloes played the Oh-managed Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks on a late weekend series in Fukuoka. Rhodes was intentionally walked during each at-bat. Again, Oh denied any involvement and Hawks pitching coach Yoshiharu Wakana stated that the pitchers acted on his orders, saying, "I just didn't want a foreign player to break Oh's record." I mean guys who couldn't hack it in MLB were like gods in J-ball. And Oh is one of the greatest hitters of all-time? Yeah, minor leagues...especially when he played.

9 year old me says Jose Canseco
42 year old me says its a tie between Ted Williams and Pete Rose
Pete Rose needs to be in the hall of fame. I think it eventually happens but it will likely be post mortem. Hope sooner though.

I can break that tie for you:
Ted Williams: .344/.482/.634
Pete Rose: .303/.375/.409

All around? That’s easy
Ted Williams
Babe Ruth
Lou Gehrig
Stan Musial
Honorable Mention: Jimmy Foxx
To me ALL around all time would be a 330+ batting average, 400 plus home runs, 1500+ RBIs
The best “all around” player is Babe Ruth simply because he was a GOAT pitcher for 4 years before switching to hitting full time

Possibly, but Pete gets the sentimental vote. That slide.

Except these weren’t average years. These were prime years and Williams was a monster in his prime.
I’d say he missed:
175 HRs
175 doubles
30 triples
600 runs
600 rbis
840 hits
700 walks
1630 total bases
and a possible boost to his B.A.

Pete Rose wouldn’t even be first in his slap hitter sub category
Gwynn
Boggs
Mauer
All ahead of him & prob some I’m forgetting.

The name of Roberto Clemente listed only ONE time on this thread, sigh.
The guy was GREAT.
Better than Aaron, Mantle, Robinson.
No worse than the equal of Mays.
