re: Greatest all around hitters of all time (steroid era included)

One thing I don’t see mentioned much when comparing hitters is the fear factor. It may mean nothing but I wonder. Guys since 2000 look like hockey goalies when they bat. The old guys on the list weren’t wearing a helmet. Ray Chapman was killed by a pitched ball in 1920. It would have been on my mind. It could have impacted performance.

This
328 career hitter
7 batting titles
No power ... dead ball era
But amazingly consistent
Not top 5 but maybe top 10. At least worthy of mention.

Tony Gwynn batted over .300 nineteen years in a row, had a career .338 avg, and had a stretch where he hit .372, .353, .368, .394, .358. In my mind he's top 5.

Does anyone else respect and love Babe Ruth, but hate putting him above a couple of guys cause we think he had guys throwing him meatballs vs the evolution of the different breaking balls over the years? And also the fact that nobody on this board actually saw him play. It’s something to consider. I would never put him outside the top 5, but imagine Barry Bonds in the 30s....
Those speedy black outfielders still aren't catching those balls he hit over the fence.

1921 Babe Ruth.
.378 BA 177 runs scored 171 RBI’s and 59 home runs. With a slugging of .846. I don’t care about generations. Every player had the same chance again as inst the same pitchers and didn’t come near those stats. Except for Wayne Gretzky not one else is even close.........0this stat line for a season will NEVER be reached for a single season.

It's not what you do compared to competition in different eras, it's how much you dominated your peers.
That's the only comparison you can make among the all-time greats because they all played against different competition.
So Bonds is judged against Griffey, Mantle against Mays, Ruth against Gherig and Cobb, etc.
Has any player dominated his contemporaries so thoroughly and outrageously as Ruth? Only athlete that is in the discussion is Gretzky.

In 2004, Todd Helton finished 2nd in the MLB in OPS. His OPS was almost as close to Craig Counsell (who finished last) as it was to Bonds (who finished first).

I wonder if Ichiro would be the all-time hit king in MLB history if he started his career in the US or at least came over in his early 20's.
He has over 3,000 MLB hits but he also has 1,200 hits in the Japanese League. Depending on what you think of the competition in Japan (Randy Bass and Tuffy Rhodes almost broke the Japanese single-season HR record) but they wouldn't pitch to them in the final games...Alex Cabrera also challenged it...and how good he would've actually been early on in his career if he was playing in MLB, it would've been close.
Ichiro (MLB + NPB) = 4,367
Rose - 4,256
