Not being a smart arse, but I am legit interested in seeing a detailed argument why any list that includes the “Steroid Era” and doesn’t have Bonds #1.

My opening argument is:
“Google Barry Bonds stats”

These two, along with all Colorado players will be criticized for playing in Denver, but Helton is prob one of the most overlooked players when it comes to all time great hitters. Had over 9 seasons where he hit .320 or better.

Trying to think of some names that haven’t been mentioned.

Here are a few that I thought of:
Mays
Shoeless Joe
Frank Robinson
Foxx
Clemente

All around hitters? Do you mean hitters who hit for power and average?

Tony Gwynn struck out 434 times in 9288 AB and 10,232 PA.

Also, Jeter had 8 seasons of 200+ hits, finished with a .310 average in 11,195 AB, and is 6th all time with 3465 hits.

Tony Gwynn and Ichiro and Jeter were not power hitters. That automatically DQs them from the list.

The list is for guys like Ruth and Williams and Mays and Mantle and Pujols and Manny and Bonds and the like... Guys that were consistent 300+ hitters who also raked at the plate and hit moonshots.

Sorry, that eliminates all the 200+ hits/yr punch-and-Judy guys.

Overall, I'd probably say Ted Williams was the best power + avg hitter. Have to remember, of he didn't miss all those seasons of war service time, he'd likely have around 650-700 HRs.

Ruth is probably second. There were numerous years he hit over.350 to go along with all of his HRs.

3 is probably a toss up between Mays and Bonds. With the juice, I'd go with Bonds.

Look at his numbers. They are stupid. People just hate him as a person and well deserved but the man could fricking crush a baseball

Ted Williams was a better hitter than Babe Ruth. If Williams had played in Yankee Stadium with the short porch in RF, had Gehrig hitting behind him and hadn’t lost, basically 5 seasons of his prime to military service, it wouldn’t even be a debate.

Gotta be Ruth or Williams. I'll go with Williams since Ruth was more of a slugger and Williams broke .400 batting in a season and also had way more batting titles than Ruth. Though I'm not gonna get in an argument for someone that argues for Ruth.

Bonds was a HOFer before he started juicing. That's what people seem to forget.

why the hell do people always mention Griffey? He's a HOF but even just the last 30 years there have been 10 better hitters:

Nope.

And if you are going to claim this one of them has to be Ichiro.

Don't care about roids. The bat still has to connect with the ball. Bonds is top of the list imo.

I think there is a very strong argument for Bonds being the greatest hitter of all-time (his Fangraphs page from 2001-2004 might be the must absurd baseball stats I’ve ever seen), but you could make that same argument for Babe Ruth and Ted Williams too. Google their stats and it’s similarly gaudy.

To those idiots (yes, you are ignorant) who down voted my comment:
quote:

Not ahead of Edgar Martinez.

Edgar .312 BA, .418 OB%, .515 SLG
Ichiro .311 BA, .355 OB%, .402 SLG

Better numbers, plus Edgar is right handed. Lefties have a built in advantage in baseball. Edgar also had power.
