does this now set the weird precedent that a driver needing to give a spot back can do so wherever he likes but the driver behind doesn’t necessarily have to take it back at that spot if he doesn’t want?
The stewards note about understanding why they fought at that exact spot probably prevents that. They each wanted the advantage that spot gave.
It's always been understood that the overtake spot shouldn't benefit one or the other.

I want Max to win this as much as the next guy and hate the hell out of Lewis
Lets be honest, neither are likeable... But its the lesser of two evils at this point.
Max is an a-hole crybaby
Lewis is a hypocritical virtue signaling crybaby

Exactly. Hopefully we get some shakeup with the new cars and McLaren and/or Ferrari can make a real run at RB/Merc.

quote:Yeah, this was total gamesmanship and it's not hard to understand why Lewis did it, but how can they prove Max knew Lewis was peeking under his skirt from behind and not also prove Lewis knew Max was giving away position? This smacks of steward bias, which is as well known as Bama bias by SEC refs.
I also don’t buy that Lewis wasn’t expecting Max to give the place back. Sure his radio guy, who’s sucked all weekend, may not have told him but Lewis would’ve known that Max possibly would need to give the spot back. So he arrives on scene to his rival going slowly and his first instinct is to just settle in behind him also going slowly? That goes against every instinct of a racing driver, Lewis didn’t want to pass there because he knew he’d get nipped by DRS. So I think he bears at least a small bit of fault.

I don't think they were going to penalize for causing a collision until the stewards saw the brake check.
Max also admitted to watching Hamilton in his mirrors.

Listening to the drivers talk about next years cars I think we will see some fun at the beginning of the year. Leclerc has made comments to the car being just as fast. Hamilton has said that running sims is pointless because of the gains being made every week on next years cars.

Question, just got sent a video from a friend thats an F1 fan...
Vettel/Hamilton Baku 2017 where Hamilton looks to brake check Vettel and then Vettel rams into the side.
What Ham punished for this?

I'm watching on the spectrum tv app. been searching for other channels for f1 but its only on espn 2.
I did a little research on this today and did find some other broadcasts, but for obvious reasons the only english language ones will originate from GB.
BBC 5 does a live broadcast, so you will have to stream the sound and tie it in with the TV. Jim Hawthorne style.
Channel 4 also has DC doing their color commentary, same method of pairing sound with video.
Looking for a Canada broadcast, but they all appear to use Sky as well.
Australia is another avenue, but for now all I can find is Sky Broadcast being carried by Network 10.

No. Telemetry showed Hamilton never hit the brakes in Baku. It was a restart.
Going off memory, but Vettel was penalized for the move afterwards and not the running into Hamilton. 10-sec I believe.
Race was red flagged and Hamilton had a problem with his headrest post red flag. Vettel 10 sec penalty was basically washed out by the red flag and the headrest issue.
The major difference is that Seb definitely drove into Hamilton when side by side. There was intent. I don't think there was intent by Max or Lewis to hit each other yesterday.
Baku race became famous for Kimi yelling for his steering wheel.

No.. under a safety car it's the leader's discretion to dictate the pace as long as he remains within 10 car lengths of the safety car
Yes Lewis checked him, but he was still within the rules
Vettel was penalized for his actions after the initial collision

I think this rule is going to be addressed sooner than later. Lewis showed how to exploit the safety car vagueness in Brazil.

I almost never check this thread during the race or the weekend. I spend some time catching up on the conversation (usually 8-10 pages) on Monday.
There have been 39 pages since my last post on Friday, holy crap. I realized this race had a ton to discuss, but was not expecting that

So Ham and merc being hypocritical now?

No. Hamilton never hit the brakes. Ham just didn't accelerate out of the corner like he had the previous restart. Seb was caught offguard and hit Hamilton.

I have learned from this race, that Max fans and Lewis fans literally do not watch the same race. Very difficult to be objective.
FYI...Lewis fan here and Max should have been penalized!

Lewis so lucky to not have his car disabled from the couple of near misses
